pieman: I think that the ending leaves a lot of room for self-interpretation. However, if you want what the director wanted you to think (hehe, or what a lot of people wanted the director to make people think) then go and see End of Eva. Personally, I liked the series ending better, but that's just me. However, I thought that the series ending was simply Shinji's decent into insanity and how his conscious mind fights to maintain hold of reality. There's my two cents. Cheers.
EDIT: but then again, I haven't seen the series in about a year now, so I could have forgotten what happens at the series end.
