NEW GAME GENRE IDEA!!!!!!!!

I realize many of you are going to laugh when I say this, but I think it would be REALLY cool to see a 1st-person RTS. It sounds a little weird, but think of the possibilities. You, as William Tecumseh Sherman, would for the first time actually have to rely on your command staff to help you. You send orderlies to your subordinate officers, and if they get shot on the way to deliver your message, then you would be in deep [feces. And actually getting to fire a Lamatte pistol at your opponents, or ride around on the front line to boost morale would be great. Of course, a stray artillery shell might fly through the tent roof, but such is the price to pay for entertainment.

The genre actually will exist. Check out the game Savage. It's on s2games.com. It's getting good beta reviews and is expected to come out in May.

I came. I saw. I conquered. And sometimes get conquered.

Um....heard of Natural Selection? Exactly what u said and its been out for a while. It's a Half Life mod.

Also, theres Battlezone 2 which is sorta like that.

Silly. A general is supposed to be a commander of an army, not a warrior. He's risen past gung-ho age, rank, even physical fitness, and should realize that his greatest asset at the moment is his leadership, intelligence, and charisma. His death could mean his army's death. He should avoid risk at all cost and trust his men enough and not to micromanage. Everybody can shoot straight, but only a few can organize an army.

I understand what you're saying that he's "forced" into the situation by some unfortunate accidents, but this sounds like a bad Hollywood B-movie plot. But then again, I've bought a couple of games with extremely cliched plot before...
If they put enough tasteful humor into the plot and make it a satire, it might work.

have you ever played uprising 2 ? its kind of old, but what you did was pilot a tank thing with lots of guns and you could "call down" buildings and units and such i thought it was pretty cool but i never got around to buying it, personally i think a real RTS with first person capability (not just a mod) would be really cool. imagine if in starcraft you could be the marine for a while, it would be awsome

Theres already games out there like that, remember Dungeon Keeper? You could control your own units by possesing (sp?) them, ok so it wasn't great, there is also a game called Machines which is fairly old now which is a 3D RTS but you can control any of the unit by first person and its kinda fun, I used to selected a whole group tell them to follow one unit and then you comand that unit and go on a rampage

Ehh...I think Serria already beat you with The S.W.A.T games. But there is C&C Commando? (Cant remember) That would be a better game if you could control other Troops to create diverisons etc. If thats what you meant.

Dungeon Keeper 2 (keep in mind i said 2, not 1, 1 sucked) had the best system I have ever seen, and was seriously hoping more RTS makers get games like this, ok, you build and run a base, collect resources and build units. Then, you have a ability which lets you go into First Person View of any unit you own, each unit has 10 level, and gains abilities with every level gained in combat, you can attack from First Person and cast spells, and even work as a ......worker and build walls and mark territory, a terrific feature that not only fit the game well but made it much more deep, you could take control of a wizard, create a party of your unit by pointing at them and pressing Space, and they are your attack group, which attack with you, shows you how combt is in First Person and lets use strategies as a player in combat that ai cant do (strafe, jump, use cover such as behind walls and bridges) and the cool thing is, if you die as your unit, you are simply returned to the strategy interface.

Which in turn allowed you to make a perfect assault force, my preferred was 2 dark elf archers, 4 skeletons (created by not feeding your prisoners and letting them starve...... or convert them by torturing them and healing them in the process until they had enough to be a turncoat) and me being the wizard or even better Dark Angel (no, not the show, hes a fallen angel with coollooking black wings). Also, a great thing was being able to mosey around your dungeon, watching people swallow whole chickens at once, going to your casino and watching everyone getting s***faced on your booze. Or going to the Lair and waking people up with your sword, goto your workshop and make doors and traps, or goto the library and study new spells for yourself. Or goto the combat pit (gladiator style) and battle other creatures for XP. A very good game, and the cool thing is, theres a game mode where it lets you freely create pretty much anything u want without any attacks attacks.

But theres a button that triggers of what level and if you want a small attack, or continuous, nonstop attacking by enemy units (in other words, you can siege your own dungeon to see how it stands). And in multiplayer its a lot of fun moving your creatures out of the way and dueling the other dungeon keeper with your favorite unit. Definitly a awesome game, with lots of humor thrown in, and the cool thing is, you can find it a EB for like 6-10 $ now. Its like a RTS, a bit of RPG (leveling and skills) and a bit of action and FPS all thrown in together. Plus good graphics (not great, but good enough). Its rated M because theres lots of things in there that dont really make it healthy for young minds, burning and drowning people, putting em in electric chairs and stretching racks, watching fighter over single pieces of food dropped in prison, or watching them starving and eating rats, and besides that, your evil the campaign is done Risk style, you choose where you go and get a mission, eventually claiming all territory.

Besides that, theres mistresses (hookers) and the ability to summon satan to aid you in battle (he looks awesome, he has a huge sickle, and he walks and a path of fire follow him, and whever he goes the ground shakes and he can barely fit inside your dungeon). Also because you can sacrifice things to get gold and special units from gods (throwing 2 wizards into the praying pool, plus 1 dark knight gets you a guy thats awesome at melee plus a good spellcaster) besides the normal units, theres also the ones i just mentioned, mixing of units. The game is awesome, i recommend it

Ground Control 2 will integrate 1st-person multiplayer combat within its powerful RTS framework.

While a commander or general or whatever might not be in the midst of battle, a squad leader certainly would.

Ooh yeah, I remember the SWAT games. Awesome! Better than Rogue Spear, IMO. Much more complex. And hard, too!

Post Sun Mar 30, 2003 2:04 am

The SWAT games were great! I do not dispute that. ("Basho" lol ) However, that is not what I'm getting at.

Firstly, it would probably help to understand the concept if I explained that I am a very serious Civil War buff. If you wanted me to, I could probably recite the entire command structure of the Army of Northern Virginia down to the brigadier generals. Secondly, in every war that the US has ever participated in up until WWI, commanders have had to remain close to the front lines in order to transmit their instructions. The numbers of troops involved were so great that in order to keep them all from routing, you would have to be up there with them. (most of the troops had never seen combat, and/or were easily scared)

As soon as I played Gettysburg!, I instantly fell in love with its stunning realism and flexibility. (God bless Sid Meier and the Firaxis guys!) However, as with any game, there were always a few elements that it would be better off with (or, as in the case of SL's Moose, without). I would like to see someone make it so that you could visit the front and actually rally your troops when you're in such bad shape that it's worth risking one to the head. There would be no battle map, you'd have to create it on your own from reports and hilltop views. And I've always been puzzled about how your rank never does anything but make you feel good. Your rank could actually change your role, and I'd no longer see myself commanding the entire bolshevik army as a 2nd lieutenant. Anyone who implemented these concpets would certainly get my money.

You control subordinate commanders who would actually DO something. If you had a good commander in a good position, you could tell him to attack and he'd figure out his own way to do it. But if he's not doing the job the way you want or you'd just feel more secure, you can detatch the unit and do it yourself. (Or, if it's just an issue of conflicting personalities, you could sack the SOB )
Anyone who implemented these concpets would certainly get my money.
