Anyone seen the Wing Commander movie?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Anyone seen the Wing Commander movie?

Well as a break from Freelancer I decided to finally rent the Wing Commander movie from the local video store...over the years I'd resisted seeing it as I'd heard it wasn't so great.....
Oh boy what a dog of a film!
The special effects, along with the acting and especially the ship design, are all completely laughable.
I think my favorite bit is when they recieve a "hi-tech" encrypted message from admiral Tolwyn...and when Blair pulls it out it's a....minidisk!!! LOL in over 600 years they still haven't improved on the minidisk eh...I bet sony's happy.
For any of you who haven't seen it, I urge you to, if only to laugh your ass off....oh man imagine how embarassed Chris Roberts would have been to have that on his resume.
What I don't get: it was made in 1999 and the ship special effects are inferior to star wars (original non-enhanced version) made 22 years earlier..I mean wth!!

ROFL! Was it really that bad? Ive been itching to see it too. Hopefully his new movie in the works now is going to be a lot better.

I saw it. I didn't think it was bad. Mediocre, average, cheesy, and scientifically TOO fictional. But bad? not at all. Friggin critics . One critic chafed at it because Tiger's Claw used sonar to ping the Kilrathi's position. It didn't bother me more than Star Trek and Star Wars had explosion sounds in space. And btw, all actors were respectable veterans. Freddy Prinze was a wrong choice, but Lillard as Maniac was fitting. And the Kilrathi was laughable.

While I loved the video games with all my heart, I knew something was always wrong about the choice to make include this villainy race. I mean, giant kittens. COME ON. Prophecy's bugs were ok.

One thing for certain, DA did a very kick-ass job on the space battles and sfx. Five stars, two thumbs up, DA!

Yeah it really is lol! I've seen a few bad movies in my time...maybe this isn't much worse than some of them, but it's right up there.
The plot is boring and pointless, the characters and ships are from wing commander games in name only: ie, Angel is british instead of french, Paladin is french rather than scottish, Maniac is Blair's best friend and a hero in the movie, not really arrogant at all, Hunter is a biggoted fool who doesn't like Blair at all because he's half Pilgrim (some other race that isn't in WC games that apparently the terrans had a war with before the kilrathi), and Bossman is dead before the film starts, oh and previously had an affair with Angel. The ship they fly is called a rapier but looks like...god I don't know what that p.o.s. looks like, maybe a WWII fighter like a Corsair with the wingtips sheared off and no propeller, the missiles look like they're just stuck on the wings with glue and there's no landing gear, but I do know the space dogfights look like they were filmed using a lifesize plastic ship in front of a bluescreen with lots and lots of closeups of the pilot in the gently rocking cockpit. When they're flying through space they must rock the ships on wires to give the 'illusion of movement'. Well as far as I'm concerned the whole thing blows, I'm not even going to watch the end, I couldn't care if they all get blown up heh.
Is Chris Roberts making another film? Good lord his investors must be braver men than I.

One thing that should be considered while watching it: the space battles are meant to be reminiscent of WW2 naval battles. With that in mind the movie wasn't completely laughable. I mean, if you want bad acting just watch almost any english dubbed anime. However, it confused me royally why they didn't just turn Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger into a full-scale movie. I mean, it was close to being one anyways, if they wanted to they could just have easily used the same bloody script and it would have been loads better (albeit predictable for ppl who have played and beaten the game). Still, it would have been loads better than the steaming pile that we are left with (even though it's not the worst movie I have seen...that honor is reserved for the first 1 hour and 40 minutes of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones...sorry, flames away!). Cheers.

Each to their own opinion Fear Factor but...did you really think the SFX were good? Honestly I think Freelancer kicks their butt in the SFX dept. and that's a video game!
I dunno...but I love all the wing commander games and have ever since I coaxed my dad's old 386 to play WC after school many moons ago...I thought if anyone could love this movie it might be me, despite what the critics were saying but alas..

Wish I'd read this review before spending cash...I didn't notice any 'chemistry' between the two male leads I admit but the rest is, in my opinion, spot on.

a movie review by: Lodger

This film would be totally unwatchable if it weren't amusing to see Freddie Prinz Jr. and Matthew Lillard fight every impulse in their bodies not to make mad, passionate love. The sparks between them are so obvious and yet, they are forced into this ridiculous film about machismo and war.

The film is based on a video game and the plot is about as original. Guys and gals fly around in spaceships and shoot stuff. Then they pull into a space station and make out. The females that the two male "actors" couple up with are pretty masculine in their own right. Lillard is teamed with an awesome black chick and they make a great team. Too bad there in this piece of crap.

In the end, the film is so bland, even the young stars physiques don't make it worthwhile. The special effects are lame, the action sequences look ridiculous, the plot is unintelligible cliche-ridden tripe, the characters laughable, the dialogue inane, and the acting sophomoric. Truly one of the worst of 1999.

Wing Commander.... the longest bit of voluntary torture I've been through.

I loved the games and when I heard the movie was coming out, I couldn't wait to see it. I figured the live acting from the games was decent and so should the movie. It wasn't the case however.

I was informed that the movie was going to be before the Tiger's Claw, so it didn't surprise me to see a young blair. I was surprised to see a kindergardner's redition of an A-10 Warthog used as the Rapier. I was also suprised to see that it was the only ship. What about the others??? As for the hairless Kilrathi - well they looked more humorous that intimidating. The best part of the movie was the end where they attack a jump point and a Kilrathi cap ship is caught tryint to exit it. The commander, (in a very bad, non-kilrathi voice we all came to love) says something along the lines of, "What? What is this?!?!"

If CR's making a new Wing Commander movie, I hope for the love of all things good that it actually follows the story line.

Like the rest of you I thought the movie was pretty disappointing. What I want to see is Heart of the Tiger starring Mark Hamill. Now there would be a film worth watching.

Wait a minute. Who's new movie? Chris Roberts? Is he makin' a second Wing Commander movie? If he does, he'd better get actors who can, ya know, actually ACT! The movie HAD potential, but everything that turned the storyline into a movie just DESTROYED it. I would LOVE to see a second one, just for the storyline. Personally, I don't think the special effects were all that bad in the first one, but the acting and the script.... That's an entirely different disturbance in the force. I really, really, REALLY hope they make a sequel, but even I hope even more that it's actually WORTH makin'. Anyhoo....

I really like the movie, I own it on DVD and have watched it at least 6 times by now. I like the effects, i like the acting as well as the action, i like the WW2 atmosphere, i like the typical cliches that the Wing Commander series always utilized. The music... well the music is f***ing awesome! The only thing i didn't like about the movie is the Kilrathis. Why didn't they use the great looking ones from Heart of the Tiger?

I prefer the Wing Commander Academy animated series

It's strange that all the 'modern' special effects haven't been able to match the storyline and depth of this series and of games such as Privateer.

Mark Hamill was in Wing Commander... He played merlin, the computer.

Wing Commander isn't that bad... It's a low budget film so what did you expect? And I'm pretty sure the FX is slightly better than Star Wars... Just look at the asteroids; at least they didn't use potatoes... lol

If you want to see a REALLY bad sci-fi with Mr. Skywalker, go rent a film called "Laserhawk"...

I thought that movie was banned for being terrible?

As for WC the Movie...I've seen worse flicks....with more talented actors....

The WHOLE 007 series of movies with Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton (You can flame me if you want...But it will still be my opinion)

*flames argonus about his 007 mention*

IMHO the VFX (visual effects.. SFX is the abreviation forsound effects) are very good.. better than what you see in some movies, and especialy for a "newbie VFX house". they were much better than the crappy effects of Independece Day (now there's a ****ty movie to talk about )
