Game Review

An open ended, beautiful and innovative 3D space environment with stars, planets, moons, asteroids, comets, black holes, star bases and floating cities!

I checked out the Russian demo of the aforementioned Tarr Chronicles (ETA mid-September), and I just wanted to follow up a little bit. (By the way, it's possible to play the demo even if you don't know Russian -- just hit the obvious buttons and you'll be in the action soon enough.)

Combat is surprisingly similar to SpaceFarce: it's fixed-gun (center-fire), so you're using the mouse to steer the ship to point at the enemies. There's even "mouse drift" (so if you're turning, and you leave the mouse stationary, your turn will become less aggressive as time passes). If you don't like the mechanics of SpaceFarce combat, you probably won't like Tarr either. Personally, I don't mind it at all; it's certainly a valid design decision.

It's hard to judge from the demo, but it appears *not* to be free-roaming. This may seem regrettable to some players (including me), but again, it's a valid design decision.

The main thing that distinguishes this game is that, taken what they've set out to do, they do it right. The game development is well thought-out, action is balanced, difficulty is progressive, pacing is well-timed, overall presentation is just fine. My Russian isn't good enough to judge the writing/story until it's translated, but from what I can tell it's fine.

So in short, they're meeting their goals, doing a good job of what they're trying to do. It might not be everybody's favorite -- I think it's a bit flat, personally -- but, pending the unforeseeable, nobody is going to protest that a bad job has been done.

I've just bought the game, should be delivered shortly.

I'll have to upgrade my rig to play it, but I've known for over a year I need to upgrade
Maybe I can finally play X3 (which I loved) and DarkStar 1 to their full potential when I upgrade as well

As for everyones negativity - I've read the reviews, and I'm looking forward to it. Challenges are good, and I am not someone who cannot adapt his game-play to enjoy other games. Heck, from what's said here, I've heard nothing about the open ended non storyline playing ability that i read today. Looking forward to that too

One comment in this thread made me laugh, well - several did actually, but one stood out. It was a comment about how if 80% of a die hard community dislike the game... dribble dribble dribble.

Show me that 80%
Otherwise, comments like that - as well as simple "omfg it suxors, i hate everything" really undermine points of view in my opinion - and probably in quite a few others.

I guess most posters in this thread look at a glass and say "half empty".

Chips, it's not pessimism, but outright depression, with a little scandalization thrown in for good measure. It's just a great loss, to take with so much potential and de-prioritize gameplay, presentation, the main campaign, and general playability. To hire a novice, a 19-year-old student with zero prior experience in any related field to ruin the whole story/campaign. To essentially skip beta-testing. Etc.

A patch *may* fix the minor stuff, but the big opportunity has been lost. And that's a loss for all of us.

I'll have to wait to play it before I can offer up my own perspective, but I am someone who enjoyed the X2/X3 storylines - despite the fact most hated them.

I dislike and get bored with many games - civilisation, age of empires 3, Call of Duty 2 (enjoyed COD, COD2 didn't offer me anything new really), CSS/HL etc.
Nearly all get played a bit and cast aside. Only space sims keep me going

Current game is a browser based game, called "OGame". Tis all I play at the minute

By the way, check out Egosoft for what fans can do for a game. Not only do they have a large influence upon aspects of the game - but they've gone and made a huge mod.
All possible only due to a company that does (within reason) listen to its players, and supports their modding of the game. If Provox do the same, then even if people dislike it now, hopefully (from what I understand the graphics engine and actual game engine are excellent!) it can be turned into a truly awesome game.

Of course, it may be awesome already for me. I've noticed some people only seem to compare directly to FL, and anything not mirroring the game is dire! I do remember lots of threads about FL being crap when it first came out too, so this isn't anything special
However, I've enjoyed nearly all Space sims I've played, including newer ones - and from reading what some people say, it helps not to try and fit other games into their beloved FL mould.
Present company excepted of course, some excellent comments about the game in this forum, gave me a lot to consider... but it'll be second game I've bought this year, so it's worth a punt imo

@w0dk4

Freelancer was not patched 10 times. There were a total of 2 beta CD's produced and 3 zipped downloaded patched created for a total of 5 revisions not including the final version. I hate it when people over-exaggerate to make a point.

How do I know this? I was a tester and still have the all the originals.

I may have to give this new game a look.
