New to FreeLancer

Gidday all Just got into this game I am completely new to it, & don't realy now where to start, but I guess I will work it out . I am from New Zealand, anyone else here from NZ. Any tips or advise would be greatly appriciated.
Is it worth joining a clan & if so anyone got any advise as to which ones I should look at? are there any in my part of the world.

Regards

Welcome aboard. Soda's are in the fridge.

Best as always, play through the game basic, no mods. Take your time, no hurry. Lots to do and see first time around. If however you need helps/hints, there is the spoiler forum.

Thanks for the advise & prompt reply. I will certainly take some time to get used to the game, as I am more acustom to Flight Sims such as LockOn & Falcon4. I did have elite2 & IWar once but they got lost & I never got round to getting them again.

Welcome to the world of Freelancer Fanatics.
Once you get into the game, you'll be practically hooked.
(I'm a pathetic case since I've played it going on 5 years and just can't seem to quit..but then again, I got hooked on modeling and modding it too)
Did you get a CD for the game? If so, which one is it? (Microsoft or Ubisoft)
I would suggest start with the story line and go from there. I find myself going back to it often, simply because it facinates me.

The only thing I really wish we could do is find a way to transfer single player files somewhere after the end of the story line to a multiplayer server...so people getting into a multiplayer game wouldn't have to start off with a starflyer and 2000 credits. (eh, it's complicated)

I got an Old copy from a mate of mine it's a Microsoft disc. Does it make a difference?

What MODS if any should I look at getting? I am currently running 1.1 although it still says 1.0 on the splash screen.

Good choice. The "Real" version is the one most mods are based on. A few of us discovered the ubisoft version has some seriously suspect compatability problems.
If you grab the Freelancer Mod Manager 1.3 or 1.4, they already have some mods in a package deal. But, I'd first play through the story line without them to get a true feeling for the game.

Phew thats a relief. I never realy trust UBI with there starforce protection system even tho I do have LockOn. I have the 1.3 version of the MOD utility I think it is. I also Dloaded TNG 2.7 but as yet have not installed it, I wanted to get some good advice 1st before I start messing around with extras so I will go vanilla 1st till I get a feel for the game. Thanks for your advice & time.

You can install as many mods as you want. The thing to remember is that anytime a mod is activated (such as Crossfire, TNG, TFL, NQ, etc)
they install new folders into the original game files. Which is one of the reasons people unfortunately overlook when switching from one server to another. They'll get kicked for "cheating" even though they weren't really cheating but simply forgot to make a new and clean install of the game before activating a different mod. You'll also notice that when you activate a mod, others will become "unusable" and the FLMM will let you know it.
It gets messy and complicated especially if you like trying out different mods, not to mention causing your own game to crash because of mod cross-mismatched incompatability issues.
Like you said, play the "Vanilla" game first through the story line (I always enjoy going through it) to get a feeling for the game. It sure got me hooked.
If you run into any problems, let me know and I'll help where I can.
