check out this site newegg.com your problably in the same boat as i am . first off you would need a new motherboard and a faster processor amd has nice stuff. then more ram at least 2 gigs. but check newegg they have nice deals.

I would say get at least 1GB Ram and that Graphics card is way behind times. Get something with at lest 256MB Video Card I have an ATI x1600Pro 256MB card and it runs everything I feed it.

#1 You need a better video card
#2 More Ram
After you get a good video card with the ram you have it will make a huge difference. Your CPU is good enough as is. It will run all games out to date.

Later on you may want to get a faster HD with more MB of memory say 200GB 7200 HD.

Alrighty. So, what do you want the machine for Jaggy? Gaming? What is your budget? Do you intend to move to Vista? Do you wish to keep as much of your current PC as possible, or do you want a complete machine? Give us the details, man!

I'm planning to upgrade myself, as the R600 will be out in a couple of weeks, and the graphics cards prices should go down then (unless the R600 sucks, which it probably will). I would like to wait until next year, but can I wait that long? After all, "Penryn" is coming, as is DDR3 and solid-state memory. Good stuff.

R600 huh? I was thinking of sticking with something from Nvidia, like some type of 8800. As for my machine, I'm upgrading mainly for the gaming aspects (I was hoping to play Supreme Commander on this computer, but no dice). I don't think I'll move to Vista at all. But since chances are good I'll have to at some point, I'd just wait for awhile until some of the problems are worked out. It would be nice to move my current files to my next machine, hopefully all of them, but if I can't, I can live with that. As for my budget, it's not the best. For now, I have about $160 to toss at something, and since I usually work a full time job in the summer that equates to roughly $200 a week, my budget will probably be enough by the end of the summer. I'll probably put half of my pay away for college. Where I work is an odd situation too, as my parents own the store, and it's a 2 hour drive to get there, so it would make some irregular hours.

I also found a motherboard that might do well. What do you think?

Hmm, not bad. It doesn't support DDR3 however, nor does it support DDR2-1066. Still, neither of those RAM types will be afforable until next year from all reports. It seems solid enough though. As for your budget, you aren't going to be able to upgrade your PC with $160 . What do you expect the final figure to be?

Do you have an AGP slot?

If so take that $160 and buy a good video card and you will be able to run many game s you thought you could not run.

Yeah, that Intel integrated video sucks. Even getting a Geforce 4 Ti4200 would improve things plenty by comparison. A Pentium 4 2.53 GHz is still pretty good for gaming.

I don't have AGP or PCI-E. I just have a few PCI slots unfortunately, and form what I hear, cards will only work on them. As for my summer end total, I'm going to assume it will range about $700 upwards to about $1100. I'm sure I'll have enough money to get something at least mid ranged, especially if I find some deals. I keep looking over all of this stuff of motherboards and video cards and RAM. It's all very confusing and I'm not sure what I should be looking for. And it's further complicated since it seems that whatever I get, it will just be superceded by something better in a few weeks.

Well then, you are going to need a new MB, CPU, graphics card, PSU, and probably a case as well. For an MB, something from a reputable(ish) brand like ASUS that supports PCI-Express, SATA-II and DDR2, and comes with an in-built LAN port should be fine. A cheap "Core 2 Duo" would be a decent CPU, while a cheapish graphics card like a 7800GT will run things, but you would miss out on DX10. For DX10, a 320MB 8800GTS would perform well (comparatively speaking) or you could go for a cheaper 8600 series card. As for a PSU, you won't be running a power-hungry card, but even so I'd go for a 500W PSU (if you had a decent 8800 or 2900XT, I'd recommend a 600W minimum). As for a case, they're everywhere. You'll have to "mix 'n' match" to stay under a grand however.

Newegg 'barebones' computers

Eg, "ASUS T3-P5G965 Intel Socket T(LGA775) Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium D / Pentium 4 Intel G965 Barebone - Retail" - you can snag that for, as they say, about $200ish after shipping. The only downside is that the included power supply may be a bit 'deficient' if you want a high-end graphics card. See below for more notes.

Then you plop in a CPU, say a Pentium D 925 for $86 before shipping.

Then grab 1 gig of DDR2 for $100ish before shipping.

Et voila, new computer. You can probably transition your old hardware over with some fiddling.

(keeping in mind the video would still be integrated and hasn't improved much over the 845. In addition selling the hardware you don't keep would net you some cash to cover part of your upgrade cost - a decent graphics card shouldn't be too expensive though.

Additionally, if you want to put this together entirely yourself, then you may be better off pricing out a decent case and an i965 board - for example the Rosewill or Cooler Master cases, and the MSI G965M-F LGA775 board)

I'll probably get the 8800 GTS with 640 MB DDR3 (will the DDR3 be a problem?), since it seems it'll only be about $50 more. I'll also get 2 GB of DDR2 ram, which will probably be annoying to get, so that it matches the specifications of the board. Not sure if I'm just upgrading my computer or building a new one here anymore. I sit cheaper to build one? Or can I get a nice prefab somwhere?
In addition, anyone know where I'm going to get all of this?

I would stay away from Vista and stay with XP or XP Pro for about 2 more years as it will be that long before Vista will be able to performe as will as XP does now.

Or wait untill vista's first SP comes out, if it fixes almost everything i may look at it again. if not i wont
