Dogfighting techniques

I'm playing through the campaign for the second time (the first was years ago) with the Discovery mod. I'm finding the enemies tougher since the mod makes the enemies use bats and nanos, so I was wondering if anyone has dogfighting tips. Any tips are appreciated, but I was especially wondering about:

1. Techniques for dodging fire from the rest of a pack while pursuing one enemy.
2. Does strafing in the opposite direction of a turn make the turn faster?
3. Is hiding around objects really effective?
4. Mouse flight or free flight?

1. Strafing left-right, sometimes it helps.
2. Don't know.
3. When you have to destroy Rheinland fleet in the Tau systems, you can hide from the gunboats behind an asteroid and wait. Invincible Juni and Kress will destroy the enemies. I don't know about the latest version, but in Discovery 4.79 it was the only possible way to complete the mission, because the Rheinlanders were too tough. Also, when I returned from Tekagi's base, I had to hide somewhere for the same reason, but I don't remember where.
4. I always use mouse flight.

Thanks for the advice!
Is cutting the engine an essential technique? I managed to do without it the first time I played, but that was without the Discovery mod.

2.) Yes,it's like a handbrake turn, also use reverse for a even sharper turn..but ur ship must be quick to use this otherwise ur a sitting duck

Engine kill is not necessary. I completed Discovery without using it.
