Transfering mp characters

Finally got around to replaying Freelancer, this time with a friend. I figured out the -slocalhost:2302 thing to connect to myself, how do I transfer my mp character to my friend's server?

We get together on weekends, but during the week we put in a couple of hours by ourselves. So it'd be nice not to have to maintain separate characters for when we play alone and when we play together.

I've often thought of this as a way people who have completed the single player story line could continue with their character in multiplayer. (to take an existing level character in (now) open single player (that's after the story) and install them onto a MP server to establish a character at the present game level with current ship, loadouts and credit level. (would cut the extensive time to build up a new character on a MP server it seems)
However, I don't know of the practicality of it.
If you can place both of your MP account folders along with the generated server ID specific to the new account (as long as they don't have duplicates), it seems to me that it's possible to do.
I don't know if the basic game server engine would allow it, but I know it allows for account editing. If however you're using IONCROSS, that may get really touchy.

Yeah I tried IonCross but it's not clear about what it does and I guessed that it probably meant windows accounts (because it talks about those)... I'm not a pc newb but seriously, documention oughtn't be so vague.

I don't really mind not being able to transfer SP to MP, after all we don't have SP characters. I just want to be able to play with my friend, and play by myself when I have the time, without needing 2 MP characters (one for when by myself, the other when playing together).

How do players transfer their MP character from one server to another then? I'm pretty sure I've heard about this. That should help me too.

Hmmm,

My understanding of how the MP game works is that the character is stored on the server. The only way then to transfer them effectively would be to share the MP server files. This can be done by copying the file, or if you know how to figure out who's is who's IN the file folder, then just the files within that you want transferred. I am not sure if this would work but its worth a go.

The files are small so they should easily be transferrable over any filesharing IM program (Such as Yahoo or MSN) and you can always just e-mail it.

Just if you do this (assuming it works) remember to transfer the updated file BACK to your local server so that you have the updates from playing together.

One downside, I do not think you can use a SP game character in MP. I could be wrong there as Ive never tried it.

I did not think the IONCROSS Server Operator would do this but I could be wrong there. I know the SP IONCROSS Character editor wont work at all on MP files.

If there is another way Ive no idea, but thats how i would do it were I of mind to..

I found the freelancer save editor works well with MP files
just find the file you want and put it in a folder by itself
otherwise it tends to just show the newest file in the folder
you also nees a list of hashcodes to use that program

if you can't transfer MP files you can always make a new character and copy the data from the original file into the new one by hand

I think the MP save names are a mix of info from your player ID and the server ID so, just transfering the fie to the other computer might not work

I will only meet up with my friend on weekends, so I'm trying to come up with a solution before I go to his place. It'd blow if I brought along the character file and it wouldn't load because some ID doesn't match.

But hey, thanks for the feedback regardless, appreciate it.

Edit: Took a look at the filenames. Make no sense whatsoever. Registry entries show mp ID#, mp account # and name, but not the "account #" which shows up when you run FLServer and display accounts from there.

I found the editor (Juergen's (sp?)) by searching the downloads, but what's this about needing hashes? Will check it out when I get back.

Edit 2: Oh, and thanks about the new character - copy old data tip, I thought the game actually saves account info INSIDE the character file so I thought something that simple wouldn't work. Will try that if the editor doesn't work.

Edit 3: Right, I installed the editor and used it to decode an mp character file (*.fl). You're right, it contains only character info, nothing about accounts or IDs. Seems like that's handled by the folder/filename. So... I assume a straight copy-paste won't work, but all I have to do is just create a character, then replace the resulting .fl file with the data I want transferred.

Great, hope it works! Will update this weekend.

Good Luck.

if all else fails you could use the Ioncross Freelancer Server Operator program to edit the data of a new file and adjust it to match the changes in your other file
that would be a bit easier thatn using hashcodes

My friend's PC chose this weekend to go berserk, argh... so it'll be a while 'till I get to test this out. Sorry.
