New to Mods

I have played Freelancer for awhile now, but I have never downloaded/installed any mods. I want to get a nice singleplayer mod with lots of new ships etc.

Can someone point me in the direction of a good one?

A few questions also: "Do mods make the game harder to run?" and "What steps do I need to take to install one and preserve the games I already have?".

Thanks for your time.

Uh, sorry for the double post, but is the new Discoveries Mod good for a mod newbie?

Well frist off your going to need Freelancer Mod manager. This program loads up mods into this program and you just "click click', and the files form the mod are in your main folder. This is the easiest way to load up a mod.
Anyway, mods don't slow down the game or make it harder to run, but a few with tons of bugs can cause problems for the game and crash. Which happens with most mods, but some of them are pretty good that it doesn't happen.

Now with the mod your asking about, I don't know I've never tried it before.

Ok thank you.

So here's a scenario: I download the mod manager, it self installs itself, then I download... the discoveries mod and unzip it into this manager?

Sorry for the newbie questions, but I'm clueless.

Orin,

I was in exactly the same position when I installed Freelancer yesterday after a year not playing it. I wanted to down a mod and have never done it before.
Just download and instal the freelancer mod manager, then download the mod (i also downed the discovery mod). When downloaded, start mod manager and choose open file and open the (maybe unzipped, dunno anymore) mod-file. Thats al, when mod manager has installed the files you can choose wich mod to activate. Just do this and everything will be cristal clear at the end of teh procedure

ps: I downed discovery mod for online playing, dunno if it's suited for single player......

Hi Killing Nomads should get you on Robot and Monkey's Christmas card list, they may even invite you to the odd party :-).

Good Luck hope you enjoy.

No, if your not playing with any mods on, you can't get missions with, Monkeys, Robots, Nomads or the Order. They don't offer missions, sort of the unfinished faction.
There are a few mods that do make the factions let you get missions with them. Monkey Universe is one of them to name off the tip of my head.

Other then that, no, no missions in normal unmodded FL.
