About the FL AI

I just strarted playing Freelancer. I got the demo after discussion of FL in comparison to DarkStar One, in the DS1 forums.

After playing the demo for FL I fell in love and bought the game at http://gogamer.com

I have an observation about the AI of FL vs. DS1, and am curious if I'm wrong or right, etc.

In the DS1 demo, I noticed the enemies tend to try get behind me and try to avoid getting hit. In FL, they seem to just sorta fly around randomly.

For example, if I am tailing an enemy in DS1 really well, often he'll turn around and try to go over me or turn around and try to fire at me straight at -- nearly ramming my front-side. In FL they just seem to float about and attempt to fly away from me. They seem much more aggressive in DS1 - in FL if I fly away at a certain distance the enemy just gives up, where in DS1 they keep chasing me non-stop. Also in DS1 they seem to attempt to protect each other, where in FL it's every enemy to himself.

Are my observations correct, or is it that the FL ships react better, faster, and are just more capable than in DS1 (at least in the demo) and the AI is fairly identical?

Thank you.

Hmmm ... I've never played the demo. Be interesting to say what folks say about this.

I bought a heavy fighter in FL. What a mistake! It's terribly slow .. not my type of gaming style, definetly going back to a light fighter. Interestingly, the heavy fighter plays more like the DS1 initial setup. I hope in DS1 retail you can change over to something more like the FL light fighter.

Stock AI in FL is fairly weak, especially compared to DSO. There are some mods out there that make the FL AI nearly unbeatable, though.

Can you recommend a mod? Can I use it with my current save-games? Yah the FL AI is pretty boring, sadly.

Uhm... try crossfire if you think the normal AI it's boring. And try evolutions if you think the crossfire AI it's unbeatable.
Personally: I prefer evolutions, as it's more realistic: Them don't use almost infinite shield batteries/nanobots and their shields recharge at a realistic rate. In addition, them are a bit more difficult to hit and know better what to do to keep alive (For example, if you begin to shoot and it's hull/shield tends to decrease, they will try to move more up and down, strafing, etc to avoid being hit)
I tried crossfire and found it too hard, as the AI use an almost infinite shield batteries/nano supply. Maybe because I was flying in a pile of junk, as our friend king said, but I found quite frustating eliminate the shield and some of the hull bar to found that in the next run, my enemy has both bars at maximun..

Question about DSO: What are the controls like? I love FL cause it allows me to use the mouse and keyboard (I've one hand that is deformed and can't handle keyboarding very well).

thanks in advance

DS0 is very keyboard and mouse. So you'll find yourself right at home. It plays a lot like Freelancer.
