Mission Failure-- You died in battle

Hi. I am brand new and just finished playing through the Single Player campaign. Now I'm playing unmodded vanilla FL, exploring and blowing things up. I have read the forum posts, the FAQ's, and searched the forums but I don't find anything on this message so here it is:

Halfway through a mission from Freeport 6 I decided to stop at a convenient base and take a save but out of the corner of my eye I saw an Outcast buzzing around the station so I blasted it. It turned from white to red (understandably). I went into the cinematic autodock sequence and somebody else bounced a couple rounds off my shields but they didn't even scratch my paint. When I got to the docking bay I got the above message. But my avatar Trent was alive and well. I walked him into the bar and requested a new mission and was offered one. Which means that my mission-in-progress had been cancelled.

I have been trying to recreate the message but can't make it happen again. So like, waddup wit dat? Thanks!

Edit - No all caps in the subject please, it's shouting and hurts my ears.

Oops! Sorry bout that, I was reproducing the message as it appeared on my PC. I'll turn down the volume next time.

Missions appear at random. Since you failed to complete your mission, it is gone and you got paid nothing. Also, your rep with whoever gave you the mission probably suffered a bit too.

When you take a mission, you do the mission -- nothing else. You can't stop for a pizza or a sidewinder fang just because you feel like it. In effect, you abandoned your mission. That mission may reappear eventually, but don't count on it. (Maybe another freelancer did it!)

You can always back up one auto-save and repeat it.

Thanks Finalday -- I have lots of earlier saves and I'm continuing from one of them. But I am keeping my KIA incident saved for experimenting cuz I wanna see what it's like to be a Dead Man Flying.

and incidentally thanks everybody for the free work yall put in on this great site -- I've made some contributions to another site that took dozens of hours of work for no pay so I appreciate what a labor of love it is
