open jump gates vs no story mods

I am not sure if this is the place to post this, but none of the modification forums seemed to fit and the modification announcement thread is closed.

Anyway, I am new to Freelancer in that I haven't played for about two and a half years, but I previously played all the way through the single player campaign, then played with a few mods, then moved on to other games. I have gotten interested again and would like to play through the single player campaign again, but I want to unlock the jump gates and be free to go anywhere and buy ships and upgrades as I want, but still return to the story line when I feel like it.

So my question is, which mods (that I can download here) will let me play the SP campaign, but also let me go where ever I want and upgrade as I want, or at least as my current level will allow? I don't remember if level is based purely on money earned or SP campaign missions/milestones accomplished.

Ive done this before, you can edit your single player files and remove the locked jumpgates block from the file, but you will need a program that decodes the files contents, then edit the file, then save it and then finally recode it.

This is the easiest way I can think of doing it, there might be programs on the download section that can do this for you, but they usually corrupt your files so I find doing it yourself a much better way.

So would the editing program be some kind of save game editor, hex editor or something else in the mod/editing forums? Or is there a specific file that can be opened with something like notepad?

I was browsing/searching the downloads, and there are some open jump gate mods and an open SP mod. Does anyone have experience with these? It looks like the open SP mods just entirely take away the story missions entirely though.

I just found another mod that may do what I wanted. The "All Ships Available for the Storyline MOD by IronSceptre." Looks like I could do the story line, but still get what ever ships, weapons etc I could afford or find. Maybe if I combined this with the open jump gates mod. I would have exactly what I wanted.

I am still curious whether any one has used these mods and what they thought of them.
