Freelancer... What it could have been.

Several of us may have noticed a few screens and trailers from things never seen ingame

well, the early versions of Freelancer contained all of this cool stuff

Please submit links to whatever trailers/screens/other (for stock files just give the path from the freelancer folder) stuff from these early versions here.

My own links:

BmB23 - if you don't mind, I will be moving this topic to another forum shortly - its the one for newer members to the forums etc, as there you guys can discuss to your hearts content. In this forum, it has been done to death

No offence, just wanting to make sure new people checking out that forum can get stuck into what is a great topic of discussion!

Oh....man.

That seems like a much more detailed, believable FL world. Trailer 2 I especially like. Except that FL then is much less graphically detailed. Ideally, FL with it's graphics now and it's storyboard then would be perfect but...can't have everything I guess. It makes me wish sooo much that there was going to be another FL game but you never know I guess, however unlikely it seems. I guess it changed a lot in development. Seems kinda rushed but still a very addictive game. Still one of my favourites.

Rather rushed yes.
I wish the storyline continued until level 36... That would be fun.

WOW trailer 2 is cool!!!

shame though ....

I feel the story is nice personally, and the graphics
are nice, though those previews look awesome!

but i have to admit to dissapointments,

firstly, combat seems simpler than earlier games
such as freespace 2, independance war 2, starlancer
etc. Perhaps im just a poor player tho ;p

The bar missions could do with more variety imho,
as could the repsonses from people in the bar.

Its still a polished game, but i remember the huge ambitions of the author when development was announced. I personally think that when microsoft got involved compromises where made to speed up commercial release.

i would gladly give up the gfx just for that gameplay, defender extending wings, realistic gameplay, such as realistically sized stations and capital ships.the planetary combat, just....M$ doesn't know what kind of mistake they made, this game could of been a best seller, but nooooo, they had to rush it to satisy some damn critics, talk about peer pressure.

more like they smothered it in the crib when they saw how much better it was than allegiance

Well, actually...

FL was almost cancelled... twice... and took 5 years to develop. It made back its investment capital... barely. There are three reasons why FL2 was never made: $ $ $

And if you don't like that, well... tough. Trust me, I'd personally like to make a new game of this kind with better features... but raising the investment capital from a publisher (nevermind all of the other obvious issues, such as the fact that I don't run a studio with AAA priors) would be very, very hard indeed. X3 pretty much has this market to itself, when it's released. Which is too bad, all things considered- while X2 is neat, and X3 looks very cool... it's not the kind've game FL is.

We should all keep in mind that ... even though this has turned out to have a very strong cult following... it's just that... a cult following. If it weren't for the extremely strong mod scene, I doubt anybody would be playing this game at this point, honestly.

I'm Mod free, and I don't think it lessens the game at all.
