Good 3d modeling programs?

I'd like to get started modding and making my own ships, 3d models, etc. Can anybody with experience recommend some good 3d modeling programs?

Anybody out there?! I'd love to have some advice!!!

For custom ships and stations:
I use gmax for moddeling, milkshape 3d for textures and exporting to .cmp (you must get cmp exporter. too find it, look at general editing forum - utilities and other goodies (one of the red ones)). To edit and place hardpoints, you can use milkshape, but also Freelancer Hardpoint Editor

You can find more info and these programs in forums (Tutorials section, Utilities and other goodies by Juni and Trent).

I recommend Blender 3D. It has most of the options and features found in the $1000+ progs, but for free.
