SUR files

I am new to modding and this question has probably been asked a million times, but what are sur files and how does one go about making them? What utilities are needed to make them?

Someone once said if you play a country song backwards, you would get your dog, your truck, and your wife back. Stop the song before the end, because 2 out of 3 aint bad.

SUR files are what FL uses to determine if your ship has been hit or not. At the moment we don't have a reliable way to make custom ones (although there is a beta version of a creator being worked on), so we have to do a "best fit" with one of the stock ships' SUR files.

*ahem* don't forget we also use FL model resizer(EOA consortium) to correctly size them and ships as well ; - )

oops
How could I forget that- I've used that tool numerous times myself to get my ships to line up better with the SURs.
