Is it possible to design new cities / landscapes?

Is it possible to construct and add brand new cities into freelancer? Im guessing here that the cities in the game are actually made up of a number of pretty primitive 3D objects.

If it was possible, I would probably have a go at modelling new cities and landscapes, i wouldnt wanna be the person that had to program it into the game itself mind you! since modelling is as far as I go tbh.

It would be a fun project though

Specially for Mods like star wars and stuff where you really wanna use star wars like buildings and scenery to really give the mod more charm.

I only play the original freelancer nowadays mind u.

Yes, you can make new Cityscapes. They're just CMPs like ships are, really. The trick is getting the scripts written, for things like landing sequences. These are THN scripts. Please see the THN scripts included with my XML Toolkit Mod series, the previous versions of Freeworlds... or check out the Freeworlds development Forum, where they talk about the new landing scripts they've been writing.

you're absolutely right that cities are collections of primitives, - backdrop, sky, buildings, ground, misc, etc heh - but there's really no reason to build them in parts afaik

DA built them in parts for two reasons:

1. It made it possible for them to do animations. Kind've hard to have animated trains in New London if they aren't seperate objects. Yes, they did certain types of animation within the models themselves, but for the most part they did it with scripts.

2. It made it possible for certain types of tricky camera things to be done, without building entire cities "in the round". If you look at the way they handled a bunch of things like landing sequences... they often did some fairly fancy things with the relative positions of objects to play tricks with viewers.

Basically, though, you're entirely correct. I've built new Rooms, and they work just fine. No reason why Cityscapes couldn't also work very easily.

Ok, well thats excellent news, Im glad.

I have a number of other questions, all relating to cityscapes and landing scenes. When you dock at a planet, Im guessing that your actually looking at two scripted scenes. The first scene is the spacecraft comming in to land, we look through a camera that tracks the spacecraft in its movement. The second sequence is the spacecraft fully landed and the options to go to bar etc become available at this stage.

Am I right about that? If so, heres a question, and i might get laughed at for this, but im going to ask anyways.

Is it possible to enable turrent view for the camera in the second scene? im asking this because if thats possible then you would be able to create bigger cities that can be looked at from a user controlled 360 degress of choice.

That in my oppinion would be really lovely...

To Champs

I had a look at your freeworlds, it looks very interesting, specially the scenes with proper mesh landscapes (i intend to do it also). The only think i would say is rid yourself of the odd mushroom trees and see about getting high res landscape textures.

very good work, I created a landscape and texture set for you to play with.

Model and Texture Size: 1024 x 1024
Texture Format: JPEG (High Quality)
Maps: Diffusion, Ambient and Bump
Polygon Count:: 4050

I can adjust the above attributes very easily too

Important to note, the landscape I made for you above could be described as a standard landscape, it hasnt been edited to make room for landing pads and buildings. It is however possible to make adjustments of that nature, but it would be best for me to do that type of thing at my end.

I can make about a billion different types of landscapes, but im more limited when it comes to textures, despite this, i can cover the basics - grass, rock, desert, snow and moon's

I gave you a bump map with the landscape, if freelancer supports bump-mapping then thats a major step-up when it comes to in-game graphic quality, it would look very real indeed! but some how i have my doubts it would be supported, givin the age of the game.

If you do happen to want more done, feel free to say so.

Cheerio
