adding "layers" to the game

ok I admit that I am new to modding freelancer( as in I havent done any yet but I am reading up on it and geting the resources to do it) but I have done some small mods for morrowind ( nthing worth giveing out , mainly because it has been done to death lol) and I have dabled in some free game developer software and I was wondering if it is possible to add a layer ( I think thats what it is called) so you could do dogfights in a planets atmosphere ( I recently saw a trailer for freelancer were there were cutscenes with dogfights and crashes in the atmosphere) this would be placed after the docking scenquence but before the landing cutscene, this would mainly be SP but I have seen a mod out there that got rid of the dockrings and made the whole planet dockable (some other ones just put a smaller device there that triggered the docking scequence and landing cutscene) so it might be MP possible. The mod that makes all freelancer ships into cartoonish planes and boats got me thinking of this.
Another question I have is, is it possible to make a small script to add to the shipdealers that would allow you to buy back your old ship back? I was reading a tutorial on modding for freelancer and saw that the numbers that dictate weather a ship is buyable or not is 110 ( buyable) 001 (not buyable) so if the script were to work it would have ALL pilotable ships in the game listed and when a player sold a ship to a dealer it would deactivate the ship on the list that the player bought and activate the one that was sold to the dealer( since a dealer can only have three ships in the room) what this might make possible is so players could have "garages" in the game. In MP these garages would be a server reward to players that make a clan (or maybe join?) so that the can own more then one ship ( insted of running more then one account). Any thoughts from the experts here?

While Theoretically possible... the PITA factor on that project'd be about 11. You would essentially need to add several new systems... to each system already in the game. you would also need to modify the starspheres in these new systems to make it look like you were flying through an atmosphere, as opposed to space. you'd then need to change the object entry for each and every dockring you wished to go to a flyable atmosphere instead of straight to base.

BUT: this would have some interesting side-benfits: multiple (almost unlimited!) bases on each planet without multiple dockrings.

The look and feel of flying in an atmosphere, though the physics would still be Space physics, no gravity on planets.

But, if anyone feels up to the challenge of modelling new starpheres to make planets, modelling new objects to make cities, and doing all that lovely coding, it could be done. I just doubt it would be worth the effort.

thanks for the info, I dont know what PITA means but it cant be good to have that high a PITA factor lol. If I didnt have so much on my project plate ( I am looking to open my own art and hobby supply biz, as well as develop my own board game, and I just landed a freelance art project ) so between that and a full time job I dont have the time to do this myself... yet. I would love to do a mod for this game ( I have done some minor mods for morrowind and liked it ) so for now I am reading what I can and dableing in various programes needed in makeing these mods. So what do the rest of you think? All insight would be great. And if anyone wants to tackle this Ideal go for it

Blessed Be to all those that still dream of the flight to the stars.
