*Cries* Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaavepad
Speaking as someone whose been involved in the music industry for years, i'd categorically say NO, you can't use the tracks listed.
Written permission must be gained from each individual artist/record company/publisher in question or you are in possible breach of copyright, end of story.
The issue obviously raises itself in that you're not charging for the use of these songs and thereby not losing revenue for the bands involved. However, some of these artists may not wish their songs to be associated with a game/mod (in this case Freelancer) and said artists are quite within their rights to issue you with a writ preventing you from using their songs and suing your ass into the bargain!
The other point is of course they may never know you've used their songs in a mod as they probably don't play Freelancer. It's a giant can of worms to be fair, be it on your own head and tread with caution is the only advice i can give. Best to write some original stuff and use that, safer and shows off talent

The instant you take tracks off a cd and release them in a mod is a serious breach of copyright (file sharing) and is 100% ILLEGAL!! Those tracks were put on a cd for one reason only, to make the bands in question money. Not sure where you get the idea it's not illegal to do that because i can assure you it is !

Also, alot of artists won't freely give permission - The Prodigy's record company, XL-Recordings, for example, won't. In order to get permission, you'd need to 'donate' as it were - And it's in the hundreds (of british pounds).
So, I'd just stick to freelancer music, or stuff you've made yourself...It's what I'm going to do now, anyway (Shame, I found the perfect soundtrack )

Another hint on getting your music tracks down in size:
http://wavemp3.videoripper.org/
On this site you find freeware that converts any MP3 into a wave mp3...
You get the benefit of small mp3 files and the freeware makes it readable by wave format.
All is explained how it works and its easy & fast...

P.S. I am going to contact some smaller electronic record label companies to see that I can find one that would give free copyrights in exchange of publicity for their company & artists.
I would then give credit to the artists and the record label and would make a link to their website on ours so that they would get some commercial benefit out of this.

After sending out 5 e-mails to some smaller electronic record labels, I have received permission from 1 company.
I got copyright free permission to use +/- 55 music tracks...
So this proves that one can find music tracks to use if one wants to take the time and effort to ask for permission...
I will start working on a new audio pack which uses these tracks...
And of course some of them will be used in our next 1.85 Monkey Universe mod (currently under beta testing)
