Changing the Interface

Basically, what I'd like to do here... should be fairly simple.

I want to have a crosshair that's positioned in the middle of the screen, at all times. For the mod I'm (slowly) working on, this will be used by players to aim their weapons, instead of using the cursor (the weapons are all fixed-forward, obviously, and can't turn).

Does anybody know how the graphics of the interface are placed? I'm still doing some research here, but I can't seem to figure this out just yet. I don't care if it's "not right" at X resolution (yet)... if I can get it to work at 1024/768 by altering/adding the GUI, then it's fine. But as everything seems to be a "button" that's rendered on top of the GUI elements, I'm still trying to figure this out... surely there's a way to offset a GUI element... I'm perfectly-willing to sacrifice a standard GUI element for the "crosshairs"... say, the Formation icon... by placing it in the center of the screen and altering its graphic... please let me know how to move it.

I'd really rather do this than have everybody forced to use free flight, which is hardly an intuitive way to control a ship, imho... and it doesn't get rid of the central problem, which would be that the cursor's position would have nothing to do with where the weapon was going to shoot.

Anybody know how this can be done? Surely it's buried in the GUI files somewhere. I'm still trying to figure this out.

i think its not possible without the game's source files.

you can change a few tings in the interface like a few colors, fonts, that has been done already by a couple of ppl, but you cant make it behave in a different way. not really.

Bah... phooey!

I guess everybody can play using the cockpit view, then...

Oh... wait... how are custom cockpits done? That'd do it... I just need a custom cockpit... with a crosshair and nothing else. Guess I'll have to figure this out.

just need to get all the cockpits and a cross hair in the middle appox, then just edit the hardpoint Min, Max on all guns and done.

Note there are some of 40 ship with about 4-8 gun and one cockpit each witch would take a very long time, unless you made it so the ships with the fixed crosshair has an advantage then you could save your self some work.

Actually... I'm looking at a TC concept... I'm going to drop all of the ships, actually, and just have a few custom ones be available. This is a MP PvP mod that I'm working on... so telling each of those ships to use a common "crosshairs.cmp" for their cockpits is no biggie

It'd be quite the pain to do for regular ol' FL ships... I almost certainly won't bother.

In short... I'm not using the cockpit as a cockpit... but as an aiming point.

The chief reason for doing this... is that the game will feature fixed-forward guns on the fighters (for more of that "joystick/FPS feel", and to make it much easier to game-balance for MP). Heavier ships will still mount turrets, of course, which I'll game-balance by working with the shot speed, damage and ROF, since I can't mess with their turning speed without making aiming almost impossible, since then they'd lag behind the mouse targeting icon...
