Help analyzing available data

I would like to learn how to analyse the available data in an unmodded game.

In particular, I would like to see what determines spawning. Obviously this has to do with preset regions in the current the map. I'd like a quick pointer where to look, or if there's an article on this, please let me know what I should read.

Also I would be interested in how to find out where all the objects of kind X are. E.g., the location of all the bases, or the location of all the planets, stars, depots, wrecks, lanes-gates, etc.
