Chapter One

521 AS, Planet Houston, Texas

“Hey, Barkeep”, yelled Joey Synkouski as he strolled into the bar, “Gimmie a large Liberty Ale, and don’t skimp on the ice!” As Joey sat and nursed his drink, he reflected on his newfound good fortune. With this shipment of goods, he would finally be able to pay of his debts. “It wasn’t like I MEANT to trip into that priceless glass sculpture”, he groused. “It wasn’t my fault that the museum thought it a good idea to put a one inch high podium around the sculpture.” “And it certainly wasn’t my fault that my shoe sole came off and made me fall.” But all that was behind him now. One shipment of trade lane parts to the new Dallas Research Station and he would have enough money to pay his debt and begin a footloose life among the rich of Houston. He began to grin as he noticed his partner (“Business partner”, he told himself) enter the bar. She made her way over to him. As she moved, Joey savored her movements. Her slim profile, beautiful face, long hair and ample chest always brought a smile to his face. And the striking green eyes topped it off like a cherry on a sundae. Sure, he wasn’t completely ugly himself, but compared to Ashley, he was a pig wallowing in mud. But they worked together for business, not pleasure. She had needed some money and answered his ad for a freighter aide in the paper. She had ended up liking trading so much that she had ignored the lucrative modeling contract that she had had lined up. “Hey, Joey” said Ashley, “the Fort Worth is ready to go.” “Great”, responded Joey, his dark eyes full of the promise of a new voyage. “Let’s go”. As they headed towards the landing pad, a fragment of a paper fell to the floor behind them. It read: “Big experiment slated to begin in two weeks at” and there a jagged tear removed the rest of the article. Joey wouldn’t have cared anyways. He never read the paper. A pity, because it could have saved his life.
