The Haunting of Ithaca Station.

A manhatten please, extra mint." Freelancer and salvager Evan Whitmore ordered at the Manhatten bar.

"Coming right up sir." the waitress said and turned and walked away.

"Boom! Went the Electromagnetic Storm common in the badlands." someone was saying in the booth behind him.

"The green LPI officer slowly edged his small Patriot closer and closer to the derelict station. BOOM! Went another flash."

Obivously, the man behind him was telling a scarry story to someone, the type of person that spends the hole days in bars exagerating legends to get an audience.

Evan listened in anyway.

"He noticed strange scrathces on the hull, but he couldnt tell what did it." the man went on.

“The station was Cochrane class, and old research station.” He said. “He thought he could probably salvage something from it and sell it, after all, the LPI paid its employees very little credits.”

“The station when in use was mostly automated, run by a researcher and his support staff many years ago. Somehow, one day, Libertt, presumed to be destroyed by rouges. After getting no hostage demand, they realized they were all probably dead, and had ransacked the place.”

“The entire docking wing of the station had been blown off, the Bridge to the docking bays exposed to the cold, calculated,” the man purposely darkened his voice. “Vacuum of space.”

This man was obviously an old person, of senior age, probably just a senile, harmless, yarn-spinner.

But something was wrong.

It was in the story, surreal it seemed.

“He suited up in EV equipment and positioned his ship near where the corridor level bridging the main station to the Docking Bays.”

“He opened the hatch and stepped out into the Heckish void of Electromagnetic storms and freak chemical asteroids.”

He imagined his listeners in the booth side opposite of the storyteller’s eyes widening bigger than a Jump Gate.

“He didn’t even need to find an airlock yet. He just went in from the blown out section of the Bay bridge. He slowly entered the dark corridor lit up only by the twin EV suit lights he wore and the sudden and frequent crash of the Electromagnetic storms that make the Badlands their home. If you were looking at him from his ship, he would vanish into the corridor about now as he walked further. Then, came on the com-line, the most frightened, blood-curdlining scream for help and mercy you will ever here. And then the line went dead. The computer recoreded all of this. But, when the LPI investigated the station. There was no body. No signs of anyone ever being there. And after they sent this message. They too,” the man paused in suspense. “Were never heard from again!”

Some people gasped, others were just wide-eyed at the story. And one small child walking by with his parent exclaimed, “COOL!” The mother promptly scolded him and they went on.

“To this day, no research or invegtigative team has ever returned. Some say there is a horrible radiation on the station. Others, say there is a brain-eating monster you wont find any where else but at Ithaca. Others, well, their too frightened to talk of it. And no one, goes near Ithaca station who has ever heard, the story of, THE HAUNTING, OF ITHACA STATION.”

Hmm. That sounded intresting. Evan wondered. Would it be worth checking out, after all, he was a salvager. He had a CSV of his own after working for the Junkers some. The next wreck he was going to was in Whitney asteroid field in California. Maybe he would make a detour to check out Ithaca on his way there. He finished his drink and set off for the equipment dealer to tell him to get his ship ready.

When all else fails, tell them you want world peace.

Not bad, an advise though. If somebody is saying something without anything happening in between two sentences then you do not have you put separate citation marks on the sentences.

Rather good otherwise. Will you continue it?

Yes, probably. Ill try and have more up soon. But with playing Freelancer itself, and school starting soon, its getting harder and harder to write passionetly. Ill have more up soon hopefully.

"This is freelancer Zeta1, requesting permission for departure from Manhatten space." Evan spoke into his comm.

"Roger that Zeta1, permission granted."

WIith that, Whitmore set out on his way thru the trade lane and exited at West Point Military academy.

There it was in front of him. And old and rusty, yes, rusty looking trade lane registered as the lane to Ithaca station was directly in front of him. Rusty? how could it be be possible? not in space. This was weird, something just wasnt right.

Evan punched in the old lane initiation sequence and tried to relax, but something was keeping him from sitting back in his chair, even tho Evan didnt realize it, he was on the edge of his seat, engrossed in the huge cockpit window's view

BOOM!!!!!!!

"AAAAAHHH!!!!!!" Evan screamed

"Trade lane disruption." the computer calmly announcened.

"Sorry to startle you freelancer." A woman's voice came on the comm.

"We just have to warn you. Be advised, that lane goes directly into the badlands, home of Liberty Rouges, and Outcasts. Contact has been lost with all probes recently sent thru the lane."

A shiver went down Evan's spnine simeltaniosly as a million different scearioes going thru his head. All of them ending with him slowly being afixiated in space, torured to death by Outcasts, his corpse being thrown in an escape pod as an Outcast laughed as he stuffed his dead bodie's mouth with cardamine as their own grim joke.

Evan shook it off and managed an answer.

"Undertood, thanks for the warning West Point."

"Any time freelancer, good luck, youll need it..." she said and cut the comm.

She let the lane back up.

Maybe this wasnt such a good idea after all. I mean, how much could he salvage from an old Research station? No, he was being irrational. He had a good rep with the junkers, that meant a good rep with the pirate riff-raff. He took the lane. Having no idea that he had now unknowingly commited to a series of events that he just might not survive, or want to.

Thanks, heres the next chapter folks.

He entered the lane.

Swoosh!!

Streaks of whitish light flew by the ship as he was propelled closer and closer to the indimidating wall of dark purple and black, looking like it was just waiting to swallow him up. It got closer and closer.

It was right in front of him now. inches away from the cockpit window. The moment seemed like an eternity. It seemed like it was right in front of his eye. The moment ended.

BOOM! the ship shook as it plunged into the wall. What evan didnt know, was that might be the last time he ever saw Manhatten, The sun, or most any other place of civilized New York system again.

The trade lane's end was coming up.

His ship stopped.

In front of him was the most hideous sight he would ever see. It was a heckish void of swirling purple and black, and yet it seemed more empty, more of an abyss than the other parts the Badlands.

Something was wrong. He couldn't see any asteroids. None.

They seemed to surround the area, like a forbiding stockade. Wether it was looking like it was for keeping something in, or out, Evan couldn't tell. Nor did he want to know.

"You can always head back, not like youl find anything that intresting off a science station." He thought.

"But you never know! Your being irational!!"

It seemed as if the two arguing voices were both on his shoulder, their cries of debate and debacal echoing throughout the abyss.

No, how was it possible, no sound in space, but it seemed that way. He couldnt loose the voices. "STOP!!!" He screamed.

BOOM!!!!!!

Hmm... interesting. Looking forward to the next one.

BOOM! he slammed his fist down on the control pannel. He did his best to ingnore himself as he edged the ship closer and closer to the derelict station. He slowly pulled alongside and observed scrathces across the hull. He scanned the Hull, looking for answers to the strange markings. "Scan unconclusive." the computer terribly unconviently answered. "Unkown materials detected." "Unkown Materials, Unkown Materials, Unkown Materials." The computer said faster and faster. "Error Error Error Cannot comp- Error! Error!" the computer studdered like Evan did on his first date. "Errroooorrrrrrr!" the computer's voice died down. Evan ran a systems check. "Computer what was the problem?" "There was no problem." "Yes there was Computer, you studdered. Explain studder." "There was no studddddddeerrr-r-r Evan. You are being irational." It said with an edge in its voice. What? Evan thought? Evan? How did it know my name? It never talks like that. Whats going on? He thought. "Computer there was a problem." "DARNIT EVAN THERE WAS NO PROBLEM! YOU ARE INFERIOR! YOU CANNOT ACESS I AM FLAWLESS! I AM MORPHIUS. MORPHIUS IS FLAWLESS." the computer screamed. Something was direly wrong. He picked up strange reading from the station. It had to be from there. "Warning" the computer said curiously totally calmly now. "Hull fracture, enviormental loss in 3 Minutes." What was going on? Evan grabbed his hull fracture kit and searched along the wall. He found the fracture, steam of oxygen hitting a vacuum flew from the crack. He quickly sealed the patch. He had to find out what was happening. And the key to it was on that station.
