Changing of the Guard

Well, it's been a fairly low-key thing, but an epoch in the history of this mod has passed. Warzog, lead programmer, lead designer, and general everyman for The Reckoning, has stepped down from his de facto role as project manager after almost exactly one year at the reins. Thanks, man, and good luck. It's been a hell of a ride; we couldn't have done it without you.

Which leaves me, I suppose, back in charge of things. What we essentially have is a mature product, fine-tuned and painstakingly engineered over the course of many months, and I don't want to make any drastic changes to it - at least, not yet. First, we need to regroup and reassess.

If you think you can contribute to the mod, or have worked on it in the past, drop me a line at [email protected], or at the team mail of [email protected] (they both go to the same place), or catch me on AIM (my screen name's mrmcdob). I've also set up a LiveJournal community here. This is not intended to replace either of our message boards, but rather act as a more organized form of the feedback threads where most of the action has occured in the past. It's still being set up, and is intended primarily as an interim stage until we get a website proper.

No matter what happens in the future, I rest assured of one thing: things will be interesting. Thanks for your interest in this little project, and best wishes to you all.

Shame to see you go Warzog, you did one hell of a job.

BoB read my mail, i may have an offer for you.

I too think you did a great job and took it as far as you could under the circumstances Warzog. Hate to see you have to step down.

As to helping out with the mod, I am still willing to help out with the bug hunting and would like to contribute by refining of the commodities that are sold at the different planets, refineries, mines and militia outpost/TCS carriers etc.

This is one area I feel is out of wack with what would be percieved as what to is available for sale and what would be necessary purchases from merchant shipping companies etc. I am working on the commodities.ini file now trying to get a good balance of the proper commodities available for sale and what the merchant would buy.

Bob would you please give me the FTP site address and password so that I can upload my final update to the FTP site. My address is [email protected]

I just want to say I hold high esteem for you and the work you've done John. I just want to commend you on a fine job and the countless hours you put in the mod. I'm sorry to see you step down, though I perfectly understand your reasons. I'm quite sure the mod couldn't be better placed than in bob's capable hands and I hope more people will join his team and make the already great mod even better in the future. I also wish you all the best in your real life John and truly hope you'll drop in from time to time.

Thanks for everything, you've been an inspiration to many

Warzog, thankyou for dedicating so much time to this project. You've learned a lot about Freelancer, practically reverse-engineering the program yourself.. it's so far beyond my comprehension. I am nonetheless, quite pleased with how things have turned out even if it's not done. It is however quite mature in its current state as Bob pointed out.. and for what you've given us to work with we are truly grateful.

Bob, I've said it before, and I'll say it again.. I'll do my best to help out when I can. I know i haven't done anything lately, and due to severe time-zone differences i hardly see you on; i am sure things will work out anyway.

Am currently in the middle of a major rewrite of certain sections of the mod pertaining to combat. I don't know how well this will work out, but if successful, it'll go into beta soon.

Stay tuned.

I'm sorry to see you go Warzog, but I am sure that you have a good reason for leaving. I bet that it was one of those niggling "real life" commitments that has prompted your departure . Anyway, thanks for all of the hard work that you have put in. Rock on!

Well, I've run into my first major programming crisis.

I decided to experiment and change around some of the weapon, shield
and power stats. For ease of reference, I copied the current bits,
renamed them (as laser, massdriver, shield_generator01, power_upgrade01, etc.) and saved them as an .XML file set to append. After replacing the references in loadouts.ini and the associated _equip and _good.inis, I booted up the mod watched the RF intro ...

... and was rewarded promptly with a CoD. No error message, no spew, no nothing.

I suspected that the problem may have been with my current install of
FL. I reinstalled the game on another computer, reinstalled the mod,
and copied my changes. I also cleaned up the XML, removing some typos
that probably caused the earlier CoD.

Well, now I can get the game to start up and start a new game, but as
soon as I launch to space, the mod crashes. Again, no error, no spew,
no nothing - just a clean crash to desktop. I'm fairly certain there's
something obvious I'm missing here, but without any spew I'm flying
pretty much blind. That's my real concern - why don't I get any error message? Every other program I have is glad to produce them (as I've been discovering daily)

I'm currently reading through the Editing archives, trying to catch up on my knowledge (remember, I've been away from the modding mainstream for a year and a half, really), but if anyone has any ideas of what might have gone wrong with the current build, do reply.

Bob,
Did you added them to:
Commodities_per_faction.ini
Goods.ini
Market_Misc.ini
LootProps.ini
RMLootInfo.ini
Faction_Prop.ini
And depending on how you modified them, ShipArch.ini?

As to the no Error/Spew messages, that means that you have a very basic setup error.
Or, in plain English, you've asked Freelancer to do something it can't, under any circumstances, do.
Error/Spew messages are only generated when you do something the wrong way.
This has been one of the more time consuming problems of modding.
You'll need to undo the changes, then make one change at a time until you locate the one causing the crashes, then try and figure out why it's crashing, and then fix it, or remove the change altogether, before adding the next one.
(Loadsa FUN!)

Thanks a bunch. It took several hours, but I finally managed to pinpoint the errors - had something to do with the new missile stats. They'll be out of the mod until I can jury-rig a solution.

Now that I've passed my first test and got the mod working, time to get ambitious. Expect a full report of the agenda shortly.
