Fleet Actions?

This game is shaping up to be quite entertaining when it comes to fighter combat. But one thing that I have been wondering about this game is whether or not we are going to see fleets of ships engage each other. Imagine a Liberty battleship and Kusari battleship duking it out. Kind of like a throwback to World War II. Will we see small battle groups fighting each other or are the big ships just there to defend, destroy, and say "ooo, look at the guns on that baby!"?

boy, a nice little war between rhineland and liberty or an all out war for about 3-5 months over some silly disputes would be nice!!!! and i hope that if there are...we will see some fleet engagments...expect to find me there, or whats left of me lol

All I will say is there will be a LOT of fleet action in the story. Not so much in the random mission element though.

Fleet actions would be an impressive sight indeed! I recall from the German games expo video that there is a scene where a Rhineland destroyer comes under heavy fire and starts tumbling out of control until an internal explosion rips the thing into two pieces that go careening off into space. If this is the usual for capship explosions in FL, expect me to be doing ALOT of suicidal cap-ship hunting Speaking of, are their any type of torpedo wepaons like in the WC games that enable you to take out a cap ship? If so, that could actually make pirates a real threat!

In the Reactor's list of pilotable ships the Titan has a torpedo launcher listed as an option. If that's true then the question is whether or not Trent can buy a torpedo big enough to damage a capship.

Let's get those missiles ready to destroy the universe!!

You can, but I've found that cheap torpedos aren't really worth the money. I havn't tried the expensive ones (Sunslayer) so it might be. The interesting thing about FL, compared to SL is that the colonies were unable to get their shield technology to work on anything bigger than a fighter. So capital freighters and anything bigger do not have shields, so theoretically (and practically) it is possible to take down a capship if you pump enough energy into it with normal guns. This is refering to missions (stations) and storyline only, in random play you cannot destroy bases that are part of the universe, like the Manhattan docking ring or Battleship Missouri for example. It would cause some really bad problems

Can you be a squad leader sometimes?

No? Context would be nice, as in when/where.

If you join the navy, for example, could the player, in some missions, be the squad commander? Aka giving orders?

You can't join the Navy.
The game is called Freelancer because you are indeed a FREELANCER
there is no joining of factions.

DUDE WHERE"S MY FACTION??!?!?!?!?!
ok man, seriously there are factions you can Work for so technically you are PART of them... so if i can't enlist, im helping the NAvy...btw... a single torp shouldn't be able to destroy a cap, if you pump like 30-35 of them yah it's gone, but remember the SIZE difference, it would take a lot of time to take out a bat.ship or carrier with plasma guns... and by then you've got an entire armada against you. anyhow , im gonna fight for liberty and protect the innocent. with a little bit of S&D in Kusari and RHineland space of course

You can't join the navy. Period. That's what Jorg said in Austin, so I'm assuming he would know, unless they've changed something since then. Of course, you can "align" yourself with them and do missions for them, which is basically what you'd do as a member anyway.

That quote from the site is more of a marketing thing, its there really for advertising the game, and dosnt have the details.
