Escape pods

tell me what you think of this idea. instead of your ship always exploding, boom you're dead, why not make an escape pod? set up all of the rest of the ship as a destructible SUR then have a little man-shaped escape pod in the middle that can only be seen when all of the ship is destroyed. some problems: it would be little more that an interesting little thing. also it would make nanobots stupid because your ship can't be repaired since it is made of SURs, and they totally encompass what the game thinks of as your hull. also, it would be pointless because it would probobly be more worthwhile to die than to pay for repairs and new weapons. therefor a deterrent to dying would be needed. It unbalanes the game, even though it would be bloody cool. also you would need an engine flame (for the pod) that isn't visible from outside of the ship. If anyone with spare time could try this, that would be nice since i'll never get around to it.

could be interesting but, how would you set up the keyboard to activate it?
you wouldn't want to be in the ship when it blows up

Several things would have to be created for that idea to work.

1. You survive the explosion, which is posible ie Sean Ashcroft.
2. Once you survive, a way to get your pod back to a base.
3. Which base/ship would you be taken to.
4. Cost of buying a new ship.

It would, I think, be harder to make a "Wing Commander" type of ejection system and get it to work in FL.

In the old game ELITE, which is the grandfather of FL, you could buy an escape capsule. You had to use it in time, though. Wait too long to eject and you'd get blown up along with your ship. The escape pod would lock onto the nearest station and fly your there. You would keep your credits, but would lose your cargo.

It is a bit odd in FL that the "bad guys" you hunt have escape capsules, but you can't buy one yourself. It might make an interesting addition to a mod. If you used your capsule, you would be limited to whatever ship and equipment the station you docked with offered. Thus you might lose your high level weapons, shields etc and have to continue with a much lower level ship. That would be the price of ejecting. You might even find you had docked with a hostile faction, which could be rather nasty!

This wouldn't have to chance the bats or bots in the game. It would just be another option.

what i mean is that you add an escape pod into the middle, then make the rest of the ship destructible, so that the hull can be blown off (just like a wing on say a starflier). when that happens, all that is left is an escape pod, which can still fly around. you bug off to the nearest base and repair your ship, though all your guns are gone.

If there could be a way to instantly switch to other ship (e.g. escape pod) in space...
