Freelancer2: The dream re-kindeled

Now before people start flaming me for getting their hopes up, let me say now that freelancer 2 will almost certainly never happen. I'm just dreaming of what could be.

Since we first finished the SP campaign for freelancer, fans have be praying for a sequel. In all that time, we've always assumed it would be another PC outing. I mean, come on, who wants to pay $30 per month plus broadband fees to play a space sim on a less intuitive platform like the X-box? (X3 anyone?). Or worse yet, have to buy whole new computer becuase the game required Vista to run (sans Halo PC 2).

My friends, I have seen the future, and it features an Italian plumber, an elf with a sword and a pointy green hat, and a pink, ballony, sucks things in and spits them out killing enemies thingie... (ran out of steam). Thats right Nintendo (if you didn't catch those references, get out from under that rock and learn your gaming heritage) has reveaved it's new controller, for its upcoming console system and it is a thing of beauty.

Nintendo has finally figured out what we PC gamers have known for the last 20 years: the power of the mouse. If you haven't seen this thing yet, go take a look, I guarantee you'll be drooling or your money back. Your first reaction will be "WTF is this? How am I supposed to play games with something that looks like my TV remote?". As you read on, the truth wil reveal itself. That feeling of horror and revulsion will give way to thoughts of "Holy S_ _t!!! Imagine playing {insert favorite game here} with a motion sensitive controller".

So what does any of this have to do with freelancer? The answer should be becoming clear by now. The last hurdle has been cleared. For the fist time it will be possible to have a console space sim with the intuitive controll scheme of a PC game. Instead of clunky joysticks and 20 buttons, imagine pointing your controller where you want to fly/shoot. For the first time in history, there may be a console capable of doing justice to the great space sim titles instead of poorly envisioned, throw your controller at the wall nightmares.

Combine that with the low/nonexistent online network fees that Sony and Nintendo have thus far embraced, and Freelancer 2 sounds like a real possibility. Unfortunately, I can't see the corporate vampires at microsoft ever letting go of something that could make them money, especially to a competitor. So I guess we'll just have to go back to dreaming.

I haven't seen an FL2 thread in donkey's years, and since it's hardly having an impact on the forum like they used to (it used to be every other thread was an FL 2 thread about 2 years ago), then i see no issue at all with allowing it to continue if people wish to discuss thoughts and ideas about it.

There is no need to create FL2. Couldn't someone create a very simular game, same sort of gameplay and feel and just name it something else.

those mod-wizards could do a new storyline, or a "to be continued"? (i'm just a gamer, so don't waste time to explain me "why it can't be done"
if yes, there it is! the freelancer 2, 3, ... reloaded!

If you ask me MS shot themsellves in the Foot Twice with Freelancer, The First time was when they Rushed it, the 2nd was when they Canceled all possable FL2 Development & Disbanded Digital Anvill.

At this rate either Chris Roberts (with other DA devs) creating a new game -or- Openlancer are the only hope for a sequel. The FL engine can be extended and even reverse engineered to extend the life of mods but thats not a sequel. We need a new engine to work with. We also need the entire canon (SL/FL lore) in either public domain, under TLR control, or otherwise open for general use by anyone.

the Main Problem with all of it Is trying to get MS to actualy respond when asked about it, as things are MS tends to ignore the "Small Fry".

Why are people so resistant to supporting Openlancer?

I can understand a little skepticism but there are clearly other issues here I'm missing. Tell me what you think and I'll do what I can to resolve it.

The only thing I can't resolve is the canon copyright issue. I'm deferring to TLR management on this issue.

No doubt you'll remember me MegaBurn. I've been trying to get into contact with you for ages, and this seems to be the only way, especially since the Openlancer website is being REALLY disagreeable with me, preventing me from logging in or even using the Contact Us option.

Anyhow, plz message me at [email protected] so we can work out how I can continue helping out in OpenLancer's planning and development. You wouldn't believe how hard I've been trying to come back.

Yeah, I saw you registered 3 times. There are still some quirks with the CMS that need to worked out. I'll do some checks and email you...

If anyone else is having problems with the new website just post on the Openlancer forum on here.
