On Ships, levels, and other assorted babble.

Hookayee...I just got a little idea, not sure if anyone's thought it up yet, but I'll post it anyway...

We all know how leveling works. You make the megabucks, you buy a kick*ss ship, you blow crap up, right? And we all know that all but 3 of the ships are completely useless once you get one of said 3 ships. Of course, those 3 are the Eagle, the Sabre, and the Titan. And we all know those are the only ships in the game, besides nomads and capital ships(which are all unplayable anyway, nyeh), that can mount the coveted class 10 shields and guns. And we all know how every last ship has the same speed.

Now, the idea: What if DA had made the ship's class determined by your pilot level? OK, don't flame me yet you VHF lovers, let me flesh this out a bit.

A "normal" RPG would work-as you level up, your character gains health, capabilities, and ability to handle better and better gear. That got me to thinking.

In Freelancer, aside from your secondary and barely important role as Edison Trent, Freelancer, you ARE your ship. You buy it, you love it(or hate it), you stuff it full of nice components and pricey cargo. But then you inevetably shove it into the scrap heap in favor of something bigger, badder, and more powerful.

DA made the statement that they wanted us to get a deeper connection with our ships by giving us only one at a time...how is this possible if we are forced to get a new one every other mission? I imagined a ship you would buy as a barely useful hunk of metal, name it, paint it, take care of it, and upgrade it until it was a finely tuned machine unique to your own special flying style. However, this didn't happen, and we all get turned to the three cream-of-the-crop VHF's as our gods, saviors, and way of blowingt he pathetic AI's to kingdome come.

So what I propose is to make a ship that will level up WITH you. Here's the details:

1. Pilot level will determine hardpoint class, armor, and speed.
2. At any given level, you can purchase any ship for or below your level and it will adapt itself to your level.
3. Ship purchase price will go up as your level goes up.
4. You recieve a new weapon/shield class for every three levels gained, until level 30.
5. You recieve an armor upgrade for every level gained, until level 38.
6. You get additional shield battery/nanobot space for each new level.
7. During the story, you get armor upgrades after every story mission, and weapon classes every two(bringing you to the base class of the anubis by mission 12)
8. Ships will retain their base class and level requirements. In other words, a Sabre/Eagle/Titan will STILL start out as a class 10 ship(with the same level requirement). Every other ship could just be worked up to that level.
9. Speed upgrades will be available for every level. They would be as follows, beginning at a base speed of 80:
*1 speed unit per level for VHF and Freighter(total at 118)
*2 speed units per level for Heavy Fighter(total at 156)
*3 speed units per level for Light Fighter(total at 194)
*thruster and cruise speed would increase by the same values

Other minor details:
*One set of all the class 10 guns would be available to every player who joins a server.

Three questions:

1. Do you think such a system would benefit Freelancer, and why/why not?

2. Is all that moddable into Freelancer as is?

3. Am I just living in a fantasy world?

Reaper: $200,000,000.
Rockets: $100,000

I definitly agree that the lower level ships should upgradeable to be on par with the big 3, but i think just make them increase every lvl isn't the right solution. What i think would work better is making higher upgrade purchases available every lvl. Sure a brand new eagle would be sweet but if you buy a startracker, you can pay to upgrade the armor, cargo, gun ports, sheild ports, etc. The limit to how far you can upgrade your ship would be determined by level instead of having all ships be equal to you at your level. More customization this way. Makes it a bit more compelling in my mind. And also would explain why Ozu has 6 class 6 guns on a dragon that can only take 2 class 6's and 4 class 5's.

My other thought...
I read somewhere that they didn't let us pick a different avatar other than trent because of all the movies. That's all fine and dandy but they don't seem to have a problem putting the correctly armored ship in each cutscene. So why don't the let us repaint the ships? It would definitly add a nice dynamic to the clans on the MP servers. I wan't my suped-up skyblue defender.

Yes, I would by far prefer the ships be upgradable than have them just get better because I "leveled up" (what happens in MP where you can lose levels by spending money?).

I think upgrading should cost you money, and that includes upping your ships power levels (max weapon power/max shield power). So you wouldn't just go salvage some class 10 guns for your Patriot, you'd also have to pay money so your patriot could mount guns that powerful.

I'd be totally on board for something like this. I don't particularly like the look of any of the Big Three, and since your ship is as close as you come to having an avatar in this game, it doesn't make sense to make most of the avatars unviable.

Considering the idea was that there's scope for personalising your ship, if you ask people what they fly, I can guess that nearly everyone will have the same kind of thing. Eagle / Titan / Sabre, ripper mines, lvl10 positron shield, nomad weapons and maybe del Cids or Skyblasts, or a freighter. Who at lvl38 uses anything different? (other than for the challenge when you're bored)

There should be a few basic ship "designs" that are the same level but different shapes. Starting from the patriot type level, adding more powerful engines, more powerful weapon mounts, turrets or missiles if you want, perhaps better flight control surfaces for changing manouverability. Or increasing hold size through compression. In X- BTF you can increase your cargo hold size, but it costs progressively more the bigger you get. Different races could offer different upgrades so you have to get friendly before you can add your desired item.

If engines required fuel, you could play-balance faster engines by making them less fuel efficient so they cost more to run. It's weird that everything travels the same speed, doesn't seem right to me.

Then everyone could customize their ship to whatever they like or whatever suits your playing style rather than just getting the same top items. Traders can spend all their cash on increasing hold size and better armour, and fighters can change speed and manouverability.

You could take your starting ship right through the game or change for new if you fancy something different. The upgrades should be really expensive though, so you have to choose carefully. After all, what else are you going to spend all your money on? What do you do with your $4,000,000 ?

I was kind of expecting this to be part of the game anyway and was a bit disappointed when it wasn't. Maybe some bright modders can have a look. Maybe the power needed to run the game wouldn't be practical, I dunno.

fuel.. it seems like Big Mutha Truckers to me
speed.. yes i agree very much on that its just a bit not right.. but then again its vacuum.. wait thruster upgrade shuld increase maximum cruise speed.. if not... faster cruise power-up.. so those fricking wasp missiles never got to you..

argh.. im never gonna get paid.. goodbye a million credits..

in regards to speed of ships, i do believe that light fighters should be faster than VHF. I mean you got less mass to push around. It got quite annoying being in my light fighter and not being able to outrun Stilletos cause we both went at the same speed. I would after burn away from them, but as soon as i hit my cruise engines, i would slow down back to 79, and get hit by 3 Wasps, no matter how many CM's i dropped. Also, I don't think afterburners should recharge. You should have a set fuel limit. This is space, and if you accelerate to a certain speed, you maintain that speed until you actively slow down. The fast that you slow back down to normal speed when you let off the AB makes no sense to me. just my 3 cents.

That's why I put in the bit about the ship speeds...it would be very nice to actually be able to exploit the maneuverability of something like a Dagger or a Patriot by making it faster. You CAN mod the ships speeds, armors, and what classes of stuff ships can mount, but I don't know if variable classes/levels/armors are possible...

Wow...I thought I'd get flamed to charcoal for all that.

Hoooooly crap, man, that's a third-year necro you just pulled. I forgot this thread even existed. I appreciate that someone thought I had a good idea once upon a time, but there's a point after which you just can't keep a thread on life support any longer- I believe most of this got filed under the "can't be done" category a long time ago. Maybe there's someone still out there willing to do a rebalance of vanilla FL, but you'd be better off just posting a new thread to ask for that.
