Trade lanes that go nowhere...

In the new systems there are trade lanes that lead off into empty space and have no apparent purpose. Are these for me to park stations? What is the purpose of all this empty space?

Not every bridge in Ireland has a pot o' gold under it. There may be future expansions, or maybe lead to other mysteries that are not right at the gate. hmmmmm, might be worth exploring a bit, eh.......
