i need help

ok, firstly this isn't freelancer oriented although the problem i have affects the game.

Nearly all games i have won't play online anymore which i find really strange as it is something that literally happened overnight.

What happens is i can get to games lobby but when i try to either join or host a game, the game in question stops responding and i have to use the end program to close it down. Also when i look in the windows task manager where it says performance my cpu usage is completely maxing out. This problem affects freelancer to the point where i click on multiplayer to bring up the server list and it doesn't find any at all, although Freelancer is the only one that doesn't stop responding it just won't find any servers for me to join.

What i have done so far; wiped the harddrive and reinstalled everything, got all updates for windows, updated all virus checkers and scanned everything as best i could all to no avail.

I know this really doesn't belong here but im at a loss and so far no-one has been able to help me. I'm not that knowledgable about computers although i am learning all the time but this problem just baffles me. Any idea's or help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

First question : Are you able to use internet? If you can't, then try to connect to the internet by getting a username and a password from whatever company supports it. If you can connect to the internet but can't play online games, then it might be so because you don't have authorization. In some countries, they don't allow chatting or online gaming. You would be able to change the settings in the Control Pad and check if everything is right. Wish it helps!

oh - that is bad. I had probs at one stage where i couldn't connect to the global server either. It came up on screen as connecting, but nothing appeared, even when using IP connect. To make matters worse, MSN wouldn't open as it said my firewall was blocking my access - in particular, it was blocking the ports necessary for getting online!!. It was so harshly activated that i couldn't actually load anything off of the net. It in effect had totally disabled my comp from doing anything internet related at all!!
Something happened where it suddenly threw all its guards up against the outside, and it took me many trys of disabling the fire wall, rebooting, changing settings etc etc, before suddenly i was allowed back onto the net. Only problem is that i didn't acutally have the thing activated when it suddenly worked again, but had changed nothing from the night before. It was baffling to say the least......but sounds kinda similar to your prob with not seeing servers. Check firewall and other related software settings

I should have pointed out the fact that i can use the internet just fine i.e. surf the web download stuff, go to chat rooms, well anything but play games.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean about authorisation? Everything is fine with my service provider (tiscali) All my games are legal(not copied).

but since i wrote the first post i noticed/remembered 2 things,

1. my rj11 cable which links my modem to the phone line has a section that is frayed, meaning the wire inside is exposed - can this cause the problem?

2. This problem started after i installed various anti virus programs (of which i wouldn't recommend norton to anyone) and at some point a firewall was mentioned even tho i had none activated?

i'm gonna play around with my settings see if anything has changed?

Donau, sorry i see what you mean about the authorisation now, i understand what you meant.

I think the way my connection speed is quite erratic it must be to do with the cable being exposed but i never thought it would have stopped games from responding???

NOrton is the best AV out there, saying it isnt just displays your own ineptness

Spawn, to alot of people out there it is also the MOST annoying. Norton pretty much stops anything that COULD be a virus which might even be innocent programs, but still it is one OF the best, along with Mcafee and Trend Micro PC Cillin

I used norton and it indeed did stop nearly everything and it certainly isn't the best if i can use a free ware version of AvG and it can pick up virus's that norton can't, i know a bit about computers enough not to be inept and i would like to know why you see fit to judge me for using an opinion?

I created this thread asking for help as the above problem baffles me completely, if you don't have anything to say that is helpful then please don't post here. Thank you to the people who have offered advice.
