Send To Notepad

If you need to open .xml files and .fl files with notepad do the following.

1. Open the Start Menu and press Run...

2. Type sendto into the field marked Open: and a folder called SendTo should open.

3. Right hand click in the folder and select New and then Shortcut.

4. Type notepad into the field marked Type the location of the item: and press Next.

5. Type Notepad into the field marked Type a name for this shortcut: and press Finished.

Now when you wish to open a file with Notepad that it does not recognise right hand click on the file and select Send To and then Notepad. So long as Notepad can read the file it will open it.

Only if file assosiations have been set up for Notepad to open xml, fl or other file types. Right click mpnewcharacter.fl and select open and Windows will provide the message

Windows can not open this file:

To open this file, Windows needs to know what program created it. Windows can go online blah, blah, blah . . .

Being able to send a file, that has no file association within Windows, to Notepad is a lot easier than creating the appropiate file associations. It is also quiker than looking for Notepad on the Start Menu, opening Notepad, selecting Open from the File menu and then going through loads of folders looking for mpnewcharacter.fl, for example.

I'm just trying to share a usfull tip, thats all.

what windows are you running, 3.1? lol - seriously tho, open should bring up an option to find the file association on the net or define it yourself - bingo bango, no problemo

If I knew such a tip would not be welcome I wouldn't of posted it in the first place.

As a developer I come across a multitude of file types not associated with Notepad. Rather than go through the process of associating all sorts of odds and ends I find it a lot simpler to send whatever to Notepad.

Some people are new to moding and have never developed anything before. They might well be stuck with how to open mpnewcharacter.fl or a xml file or whatever. I have a simple solution, I wanted to share it, full stop.

sigh - is everybody this damn serious around here? nvm - i can see the utility of your method, but i don't think it's any better or worse than doing it the other way really.

If you have XP it really doesn't matter, right click and you're away, thought most people did it like that but obviously not, unless this is a new way of working with Vista rofl

Don't tell me Vista is old skool and like a fancy version of 3.11, cos if it is I'll scream LOL

Hmm,

When Windows 2000 was released included with some versions was a little utility called powerplay - that according to legend had been put together by some Microsoft engineers in their spare time.. In it was a very useful little tool called sentox (send to - extensions) it has those little tricky things built in plus a whole list of other features .. inc send to: any folder, my documents, compressed file, send to mail (email and net,) as well as a few others.. I dont think it was ever released with windows XP but if you google it it should turn up..and its a charm to use.. simply right click on just about anything.. net pages text etc..and a submenu pops up.. you can also add extensions but its been a while..

The SendTo feature is a standard feature of Windows XP. Righ click on any file and it is in the menu that appears.

The SendTo folder is a hidden folder that can be found at C:\Documents and Settings\Tim\SendTo. Each user of a XP system can have their own custom SendTo list available at the click of a mouse.

Place a shortcut to the folder C:\Program Files\Freelancer Mod Manager\mods in the SendTo and when you unzip a mod you can SendTo your new mod to the FLMM mod folder with two clicks of a mouse.

Another example of its use; for people who use AlbumWrap Extractor with their mp3's. Place a shortcut to AlbumWrap Extractor in your SendTo folder. When you download a wraped album just SendTo AlbumWrap Extractor to unwrap it. Two clicks of a mouse - done and dusted.
