Very bad news for the mod community

I recently visited the autodesk homepage ( the company that makes the Gmax 3d editing program) and there was an announcement indicating that they would no longer be offering Gmax as a standalone product. Perhaps I'm mistaken but that would indicate to me that the software will only be available if you buy or download one of their other products. If so then that is dark news for the modding community. Gmax is an excelent 3d design product and until now was completely free. There are plenty of equivalent software packages avaiable but most are way beyond the budget of the casual modder.

If anyone has more info on this or knows of another 3d design tool that is free to download please let me know.

Here is the link to the autodesk page: link

The fact that it was free, may have prompted them to withdraw it. for a short time, turbosquid is still offering it for download. There is no telling how long it will be available. It is logical, that if there is a high number of downloads, they make little on it, so they made a financial decision.

Actually, I believe that they are saying that they will no longer offer gmax. period.
They have a link to the 'official Gmax support site' which points to turbosquid.com, so I don't believe they are going to package it with anything- they're just 'letting it go' so to speak. It's no longer available from their website anyway- they point you to turbosquid.com to get it now, too.

I can certainly understand that they would not want to dump money into something that brings no return. I just hope the modding community can find a suitable replacement.

Well, since Milkshape is required for final conversion to CMP anyway....

Have you guys used Blender 3D (http://www.blender3d.org/cms/Home.2.0.html)? It’s free, easy to use and comes with a huge documentation.
I use it to start make some ships and I think that it’s a lot ease than MilkShape.

But, like it do not have a CMP export, I’m making the ship on it and after this converting to some format that is compatible with both MilkShape and Blender and use MilkShape to export it to CMP.

Y'know, I downloaded the trial of Milkshape, and it ran only twice, I think. Admittedly, I installed the .cmp exporter and importer since then (and I think the latter is somehow the cause of the problem). Still, at this news, I guess I'll try and get it running again. Still got plenty of the trial period left to fix it and see if it's worth subscribing to, me being thus far strictly a non-modeller...

there was an incompatibility issue with having both the CMP importer and CMP exporter 'installed' at the same time- MS3D would just crash.
to work around that, just add .bak or something to the cmp importer's DLL if you want to export, or to the exporter's DLL for importing.
