Making a standalone .xxx -> .cmp converter (prev. title:

What if I told you that I was building a stand-alone program that can convert various 3D formats to FreeLancer .CMP files? Right now, I've made two programs so far, one that converts the old Autodesk .3ds format, and one that does the Lightwave .lwo format (the newer one, LW 6 and above). I'm thinking of trying to make one for the 3D Studio .MAX format, but I don't use that 3D program, so I'd have to do tests using converters and whatnot.

In these programs, I used some code from the Milkshape plugin here (specifically, the CRC routine and the thing to compute the vertex/face normals). Is this acceptable?

Anyway, if I manage to get these to work, would you want to see the programs, and the source code?

Although I personally wouldn't understand what you had done, I am positive that alot of people would be really
A) extremely thankful/happy.
love to see the source code

Sounds adventurous - but great

What do you mean?

We need another person who understands model formats and conversion methods.

Plz make it. my milkshape has just craped out, and i really need it because of its cmp and mat export abilitys.

Glad I stopped by - this would be very useful indeed Mike. May I request a secondary function to your program that simply outputs, to text files for each mesh in the model, the number of vertices followed by a list of vertex coords? I've made one for MS3D ascii files to qhull input but a multiformat converter would be far superior.

ie the file to read

10
x y z
...

(space delimited coord data)

It's for a via qhull sur generator project I'm tinkering with

Oh and Mike, I know Colin is happy for others to use his source code as basis for other things. Just give him credit for things you have used

Stop by here =EOA= to see what the group is all about.
