Starlancer & XP

I'm having a problem that I was not aware of until well after the fact....XP and starlancer dont mix all that great. Whatever the error is, its preventing me from continuing on past mission 13. The game crashes with painful puncuality just before or just after getting to the abandoned station. I heard that there is indeed a fix but I the source wasn't very helpful beyond that. Anyone here had this problem? If so and you fixed it, how did you do it?

indeed XP has a prob with SL singleplay
there are several ppl which got it working by deactivating 3d sound
other switched to the software mode for the mission where the crash appeared
and then others dont even have problems

not to mention that there are ppl which cant play SL because no fix does help
what the real problem could b is unknown
but SL does work best on winME or Win98 (that why i always keep an old OS on my hdd)

With 3d sound off, that hasnt fixed it. The possibility of trying the mission in 3d software mode has crossed my mind so I will try that. I have also recently (within the past day or so) of having a secondary OS on my cpu, but that method is probably something I should only do with the help of someone who knows what to do...I'm not computer inept...but I'm not quite that techy.

I'll try the software mode to see if that helps.

EDIT: I got to the station and wiped out the fighters as well as the second wave and the ion cannon...but still got the crash in software mode.

srry for double post but I turned off light maps and vr transitions in software mode...got the mission completed. I'm wondering if it was simply those two lil boxes that were the cause of my agony

to my experience every PC does react different on the settings
we shouldnt forget that SL was written for win98 and DX7 - not to mention that nowadays the graphic drivers all work different

if its working then its ok... if not then only playing around with the settings will help
the weird thing is the SL multiplayer does not have these problems
