Mission 7 - (Destroy Ramases) - Help Requested

Hey all,

Brand new to StarLancer and greatly enjoying it!

I'm playing on Medium and I'm on Mission 7 - the one where you're supposed to destroy the Ramases. I have a few questions. (SPOILER warning for those who haven't played this mission).

I've played this mission probably 20-30 times now. I can get past the mission - that's not a problem, nor is destroying the Ramases. But I do tend to be a perfectionist. =oP

First of all, the lifepods. I can sometimes save Makon, but I always, ALWAYS lose at least some of the pods (and in debriefing get chastised for it - a "lackluster" performance). I've tried various tactics. Afterburning towards the Ramses and taking the fighters out as soon as the launch, using havoks to try to buy more time, afterburning towards the nanny and fighting them from there, or afterburning towards the lifepods and trying to defend them out there. But it's just too spread out and quick to save every one. I'm pretty good at taking down the fighters quite quickly, but it's never enough - there's always a fighter or two that gets away and gets to the pods before I do. I know saving Makon is possible, but is it really possible to save ALL of these pods and get praise in the debriefing, or am I just trying to do the impossible here?

Secondly, is Al Rahan invincible in the second part of the mission? I've tried several tactics (even shoved a Jackhammer up his tail in addition to my regular guns) and he always manages to jump out. (Haven't tried unloading screamers into him yet, but I could).

I did a search and read someone say they did all of the above, so unless they were BSing, kudos. lol.

If the above IS possible, tips would be greatly appreciated. (Oh, and I know a lot of people recommend the Coyote for this mission, but the Mirage seems to work for me MUCH better - it's faster and has better firepower; am I missing something about the Coyote?).

Thanks!

Whew! Finally did it! Took me long enough. Was able to save 5 pods, destroy the Ramases, and give Al Rahan a bloody nose (but NOT kill him...even though I unloaded my guns and several screamers into him).

Mission debriefing was all positive - didn't even mention Al Rahan getting away even though he did, so I think I finished it as positively as possible.

One huge tip that made a big difference for me. I transferred all shield power to a 50/50 split between weapons and engines. The weapons on the Mirage IV are frakking awesome, but take a huge amount of power, so that little boost of power and a bit of extra speed in a dogfight made all the difference for me.

I'll toss in my one and a half cents here, even though you seem to have figured things out already.

As you probably know, persistance is the key. This is especially true if you're running on a newer system where SL isn't quite as stable and crashes frequently. Some of the later missions get especially difficult with these timed tasks, whether it is destroying targets or blocking a torpedo attack.

There's more than one way to skin a fish... while the guide on this site is excellent, choose a ship that works best for your personal style. I prefer the Coyote/Patriot series most of the time. Healthy mix of firepower and durability. As far as missile weapons go, I choose mostly a mix of Screamers (for Basilisks and turrets), and extra Afterburner fuel. I'm always using it, and always paranoid of running out. I will take other weapons, such as Hawk/Raptor pods, or Jackhammers only if required for the mission. Hawks/Raptors are useful for torpedos if you've got time...

Anyways, just some general advice. Though the forum may look quiet, people still watch this. Post and ye shall be answered!

Alright, cool! Thanks for the response. =o) I was wondering if many people still checked this place out; glad to know they do. Really glad I picked this game up - have been a fan of the Wing Commander and X-Wing/Tie Fighter games for a long time and have been itching to play a good space sim for a while. I also have Freelancer after this one (though I realize that's a completely different style of game; still enjoy it though - I played a little bit a while back).

So far my only complaint is too many escort missions =oP, but given the storyline, that only makes sense. Now I'm stuck on 8 where I have to stop all those torps (though I only tried it a couple times - I passed, but I want to avoid ANY torp hits [ahh the wonders of being a perfectionist; next time I'm sticking closer to the reliant, and a blind fire ship might work best if I can't do it in my trusty Mirage [though I have to say I *love* this fighter).

I do have crashes, but they aren't *too* frequent so far - just really annoying. (And of course they make me nervous about running into more later, but hopefully that won't happen). 3D Sound was the biggest culprit, but it still crashes occasionally with that off.

Anyways, thanks again for the tip. Persistance is definitely very important in this one.

Blind fire is certainly a help with the torps. That, and afterburners. One note of caution however (and I've learned this the hard way) don't get too close to torps . It is all to easy to close the range too much in the heat of battle and crash into a torp, in which case its all over. Even though I know this can happen, I still repeatedly hit torpedos... must be a genetic thing.

Yes. Yes I've learned this the hard way a lot =oP In that particular mission, I kept hitting the darned fireball thingie more than the torpedoes. =oP For a while there, EVERY frakkin' time. (Because I was sticking close to the Reliant).

Anyways, I'm done with that one (no torp hits - yay) and onto mission 10, which is a doozy, but I think I can do it eventually with enough persistence (it's just a matter of getting all three phases perfect in a row).

Congrats. In the future, it'll help me remember the missions better if you leave a bit of a description instead of just the mission number. Been a couple months since I've played SL. Great game.

Oh, sorry. =oP 10 is the one where you have to take out the entire convoy (two fighters first, and when one is destroyed, then the other jumps out immediately - finally figured out the trick to that of hitting one with a missile and letting the wing finish 'em while I play with the other til he starts to jump and nail him), then protect BOTH the bombers (darn hard as they go after them IMMEDIATELY and jump right in next to 'em), then destroy the asteroid base.
