Read here different explanation of how ECM works?

In the manual, it says that ECM is used for masking against cap ship turret tracking abilities (doesn't seem to stop them IMO).

I read here, after a search, that they work more like traditional ECM measures and prevent missile lock-on (which seems to work in the game).

Which is it?
Is the manual wrong?

I think they work like "ordinary" counter measures. they smoke a lot and attract rockets.

Smoke a lot???

I know the countermeasures do, but ECM stands for Electronic Counter-Measures, they are supposed to emit electro-magnetic signals that confuse enemy acqusition and targetting systems, no smoking with them.

My own tests are when I hear that an enemy is locking on my craft I activate ECM, this seems to break the enemy lock.

However the manual states that it's used for breaking cap ship turret locks, this seems wrong to me as nothing seems to happen and the cap ship turrets still fire at me exactly the sameway.

Confirmation based on witnesses own experiences is what I'm looking for.

The Dreamcast manual only says ECM is used for defense against missiles. I hardly ever use it though as we get 29 countermeasures anyway. I have only used it a couple of times in multiplayer matches when I had no countermeasures.

So it's sounding like the PC manual is incorrect.

yes, electronic counter measures, but if you go into er.. 5th person view i think, and park your ship and let an ECM drop, you'll see that it smokes.

ECM doesn't smoke. The smoking things are countermeasures ejected from your ship to decoy missiles. Press ECM and a little icon that looks like the RKO symbol (a transmitter mast and llightning flashes) pops up with a bar beneath that gradually goes down - like spectral shields or a cloak.

Hi Pure,

What about answering my question next?

Post Sat Jun 19, 2004 8:42 am

I think my ECM things smoke. If I press the H-button to release them, a smokey thing drops out of my ship. maybe it's smoke from a short-circuit.

or maybe counter measures and ECM are activated simultaniously

So is the PC manual wrong?

... I ask, yet again
(and can we stop talking about bloody smoke or go and start another thread lol).

Never Paid attention to it, i just used ECM the whole time as if its a jamming device.... and drops countermeasures when necessary.

argh i'm never gonna get paid, Goodbye a million credits

Hi Ajim,

Your reply kinda implies that ECM will auto-release countermeasures... Is this what you meant, and if so, are you sure?

Okay the ECM system that comes with certain fighters is essentially a rechargable countermeasures launcher. The countermeasures launcher is a non reuseable ECM.

the counter measures are essentially a 20th century throwback from atomic submarines. metal tubes filled with ultra heavy magnetic shavings were ejected from the underside of a submarine and these would draw away approaching torpedoes.
In this case they are metal pods once again filled with metal shavings that once they are ejected they spill out their metal shavings screwing up the missiles targeting.

and yes the PC manual is wrong to a point

Thanks for clearing the question up about the manual.
About....

I'm afraid your very wrong there with your facts.
Before the advent of Nuclear Submarines, the Germans, British, Americans, Japanese all used countermeasures during World War 2. They were tiny strips of metal foil called 'Chaff' that were released by arial Bombers to confuse enemy ground Radar signal returns.
The British, who led the field at the time, also experimented in WW2 with Electronic Countermeasures (ECM) which consisted of electromagnetic pulses (EMP) to scramble ground Radar and Night interceptors target acqusition gear.

Actually it was originally called 'window' rather than chaff . . .
