Compatibility?

Where do you set compatibility for your operating system? I couldn't find it in the game options menu.

Thx

Right-click on the executable eg. "starlancer.exe", and go to the "Compatibility" tab. You can then select the OS you wish to emulate.

Hmmm... I'm not seeing that tab when I right-click, nor is it under Properties. Does Windows 2000 have a Compatibility setting like that? Can't recall ever seeing it.

Thanks for your reply.

Ah, you are using 2000? The Compatibility feature is on XP., but if you download the "Powertoy" from Microsoft, then you can access it in the same way.

Will Powertoys for XP work on Windows 2000? I've scoured Microsoft's site and can't find any reference to Powertoys for W2K specifically.

I'm having problems with SL crashing to the desktop, even when 3D sound is turned off. I was hoping that the compatibility setting would solve the issue, but maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Are there any other known causes for these crashes? I'm using a Rage Fury Pro video card and a Creative Audio PCI card.

It could be anything, it's hard to tell at this stage. Which version of DirectX do you have running? The latest version is 9.0b.

Compatiblity mode doesn't do much, and SL runs fine on my machine (with 3D sound off! ), and I run Windows XP. The problem most likely lies elsewhere. Also, have you searched this forum for similar problems? Do that before you do anything.

Oh ho. I'll bet that's the problem. I just reinstalled W2K on a new hard drive. No telling what version I'm running (if any).

I'll download the latest and see if that helps.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah, it's probably DirectX. Let us know how it turns out.

Has anyone ever gotten the message lancer has caused an ivalid page fault in the lancer.icd module when trying to start the game? And the game won't start... And what is a .icd file anyway? I am still using Win 98 (older PIII 500 machine, 512 megs of ram) and i have an Aureal Vortex 8830 sound card and Geforce 3 64 meg video card. I have tried downloading the latest drivers for both cards, disabling 3d sound, running direct x diagnostics (version 9.0b) and all the usual troubleshooting stuff. Absolutely nothing has worked. I do suspect the sound card however. Anyone else ever had this prolbem? Micrsoft has absolutely nothing on this exact error message.. and i say this EXACT message becasuse there is some crap about the lancer.icd blah blah dinput something or another, but that is not my message and i already tried the voodoo it suggested as a fix for whatever that problem was and it didn't work. I would much appreciate some help on this matter!

Installing the latest version of Direct X seems to have done the trick. I also reinstalled my sound driver just to be on the safe side.

Four missions tonight, and no crashes to the desktop. Yay!

Starlancer works fine on my Windows 2000. And YES...Windows 2000 DOES have an OS emulator. Unfortunately, I can't remember how to get to it (I used it a very long time ago).

Oh the pain....the pain.
