How do you die?

After much re-playing of Starlancer I have realised that it's a real rarity to be shot down by an opposing fighter. I have never used my countermeasures and I can't recall ever noticing a missile impact (except in multiplayer - hard to ignore being splattered all over space). Most of my deaths are a direct result of ;
(1) Flak
(2) ramming a torpedo
(3) A stray "big gun" round (allied or enemy)

So, am I unusual in this respect?

Usually a torp death. I get so obsessed with one torp 50m away that I don't notice the one that's about to hit me. Either that or the ship I'm escorting can only take one more hit and I'm so desperate to get rid of the last two torps that I don't pay attention to the range at which I'm shooting them.

I have, however, been hit by havok missiles more than once, and at least a few times ended up dead because of them- on one occasion I got zapped and ran straight into one of those plasma blasts from my own base ship, which wasn't fun at all.

Nope. It looks like enemy fighters are crap at shooting you down (they do take out your wingmen sometimes, which, IMO, says more about the wingmen than about the Coalition pilots
If not for the flak, torps, and the ion cannon, it would feel like you're playing with some godmode cheat.

Torps and the infamous ion cannon
Occassionally a wing-man and sometimes hitting the wrong key when the phone rings, ejecting and promtly getting waxed by either the firing squad or a stray enemy fighter with nothing better to do!!!!

It does annoy me when you're blasting away at a torp and it (the torp, that is) hits a nanny or other ship whereupon Moose yells, "Are you crazy? I'm taking you in!" and you end up at the wrong end of a firing squad.

95% of my deaths come from torps and flak, about 15% of that being from friendlies. Since I don't have 3-dimesional panoramic view, the torps and flak kinda sneak up on you. The only other way I die is if I am in the middle of a lot of cap ships and fighters, for which i usually make a slow escape with full power to shields.

I DO hate the friendly fire system...even if it's so much as a single stray laser bolt, if you get the kill shot on a friendly, you die. It should at least give you one "oh, that was an accident" before turning you into swiss cheese.

Now there's a thought...if you fire off a shot to kill a friendly, then eject just as it's about to hit, do you still get a firing squad or just plain fail the mission?

Please don't double post.
I'd think that since you killed the person first, then you would get the firing squad. Could depend on timing.

Essentially all my deaths are due to (2) or (3). I never die from enemy fighters. I may fail my mission objectives, but I never actually get killed in dogfights. But I get hit by stray "deck gun" rounds a lot, and periodically slam into torpedoes by accident.

Interestingly, I don't have many problems with flak. I've played through the game on easy, and partway on medium. I "jink around" on the attack run, and hit afterburners for a second or two to clear the capital ship after each attack run. And if I'm flying something with spectral shields, then flak is no trouble at all.

Sometimes I'll be chasing a torpedo, and after I take it out, I find out that there was a torpedo 1 meter away from me. I find out by the big explosion it makes.
