ARGHH!!!!

I bought Starlancer 'cause of all the great reviews here and the damn thing keeps crashing on me. I have 3D sound turned off, and the damn thing keeps crashing, most notably when it tried to play the voice for Ivan Petrov in the very last mission when I finally killed him after working on that stupid Ion Cannon for 1/2 an hour! WTF! Just dumps me to the desktop, no message or anything! And what's up with the Ion Cannons? Why do they only ever seem to target me instead of SOMETHING else? I can't even really participate in the battles near the Ion Cannons because once the damn thing targets me it won't stop, even if I go out of range! Anyone ever heard of that one?

Dunno about crashing - there are better experts than me in this field (I hope you soon receive a professional's reply.
As for the ion cannons, you better come real close to them and just fly around them hiding behind different structures rather than trying to break away - the beam is faster anyway In the final mission, most people (including me) prefer the Shroud, while in the Dark Reign mission I usually hover on top of the cannon hitting fighters with missiles until I get the coordinates for the shield generator.

Shroud is perfect, when you hear your co-pilot talk of Ion cannon lock, CLOAK!
Then proceed to the turret, decloak open fire, fly towards the next.
If you get targeted again cloak.

this an EAX issue that MS tech support wouldnt admit to despite my barracking them about it a couple of yrs ago. a sound card with full EAX support sorts it out or you have to use non-accelerated sound. it was ruining my SL experience in exactly the same way until I found out the reason (in TLR strangely enough)
