Technique Help...Please!

I have not played with Starlancer since I got rid of my older Win 98 machine. I decide to load it on my new XP rig, but things are going poorly. I get the "Starlancer " splash screen...the cd drive whirls a bit and then I'm promptly dropped back to the desktop.

Sys specs:
P4 2.25 GHZ
512mb
DX9.0
GF TI4600 ( lastest drivers installed)
SB Live ( lastest drivers installed)
XP home edition

Tried compatablity mode...no go
Tried all the hardware acceleration settings...no go
Tried a few reinstalls....no go

Any suggestions would be sorely appreciated......there has to be something I'm overlooking?

Are you not able to install it or to play it? In the second case, I've heard that disabling EAX solves the problem in most cases. Alternatively, maybe there's a problem with your CD drive (since you said "it whirls a bit" and then stops).
I hope you receive more valuable info from other TLR members who are more experienced in it.

I don't have a drinking problem. I drink. I get drunk. I fall down. No problem.

SL seems to install ok. The problem starts right after I double click the SL icon on my desktop. The Starlancer Loading splash screen pops up, but then I crash back to the desktop. Since I never get to the play/options screen I tried using AutoEAX to specificly disable EAX for SL....but it does not seem to make a bit of difference.

I don't have any problems with any other games , both old and new and my CD Rom drive so I'm figuring that it is not a problem with my drive. I also checked the CD's surface for any problems, but it looks to be in mint condition.

Erm, I don't know then. Maybe there's sth wrong with the CD (could be a bug instead of physical damage). Maybe try loading it on a different PC to see if the game is really OK. Anyway, I hope sb more competent will show up to help you.

tell me how old is your cdrom drive and the brand itself, information on your gfx card would be useful.. maybe SL is incompatible with gfx.. so more accurate information makes diagnostic easier eh..

argh i'm never gonna get paid, Goodbye a million credits

The Drive is a Liteon DVD-Rom LTD 163. The system is a dell 8200 I got new about nine months ago. The liteon driver is dated 7/1/2001. The Geforce TI4600 is the generic OEM one provided by Dell. To be honest SL is the first program that "should" run under Windows XP that I have had a problem with ( guess it was bound to happen). I am now getting an error message when I crash back to the desktop, which did not happen the first few crashes. It concerns the lancer.icd file? Can post the details of that if it will help.

I'm not a PC techie, but I'm smart enough to listen and follow the advice of someone more knowledgable then me. Really want to solve this and get SL running again!

Thanks to those that have replied so far.....

hm.. the icd is the actual game .exe (copyprotection stuff).
try to get a NoCD crack, that might help you.
if it doesn't: try to reinstall the game (do you have a cd burner or second cd drive? try installing from there)

I tried from my read/write cd drive but no go......Had not thought about a possible copy protection scheme on the cd and a possible conflict with the drive. Problem is were can I track down a no CD patch for SL to give that a try?

Thanks

RubberEagle,
Thank You! No no cd patch fixed my problem. Safedisc and my cd drive were not getting along.

After playing freelancer and seeing all the stuff on site about starlancer i thought i'd give it a go, managed to snag a copy this week for 2 notes yay me!
but, after doing full install i too am having same probs with just the splash screen loading and then nothing else happens, been reading thru these forums and realise that maybe the nocd patch might help, only place i can find it listed is on gamecopy world which links me to megagames, who it seems only want to install a dialler for porn, no problem there says i since i have broadband and no modem, but, i couldnt get the patch from there, anyone know of any other sites i might be able to get it, cos it's taking up well over a gig of hdd space i can use for other things.
cheers

I'll load up SL on my XP comp and see if it works. It might be the OS.

No you may not.

It's not the OS because my Inspiron 8200 will play Starlancer without problems. My Desktop system on the other hand won't play the game at all. Does anyone who can't get the game to load have virtual drives. I've heard that some games with Safedisc protection pick up on Virtual Drives and won't run. But that's just me.
