But that is where the similarities end between the Western Alliance and the Eastern Coalition, two groups formed on twentieth-century grudges...

The peaceful Alliance was set upon in a surprise attack whilst their forces were standing down in preparation for a peaceful end to a conflict which had lasted for more than a hundred years, the reason forgotten, the bitterness remembered...

A further struggle by the Alliance proved futile, and their only option was to flee. But to where? Alliance scientists had long thought of the Sirius Sector as a new home, but it had not been fully explored due to the second phase of the War...

Five colony ships were launched, one believed lost en route. These ships were christened after their patron nation, the Rheinland, the Bretonia, the Kusari, and the Liberty, and the Hispania. Their sole task was to begin again, far from the war and strife that had befallen the Solar System, to new worlds of peace...

And Freelancer, that is where you come in. As a stowaway on board one of the colony ships, you have the choice of which Alliance member you will join: Liberty, Bretonia, Kusari, or Rheinland...
