How to get mods to work in SP without starting a new game?

I was wondering if there was any way to use any of the mods without having to start the game from scratch every time? Even things like the Realspace Mod make me start over. Am I doing something wrong?

Your not doing anything wrong it's just that the saved game files don't match the data from the modification so the game chokes...
Sorry but that's just the way it is.
Your most likely going to have to delete all the files in your saved games folders and start a new game when using mods.

Bakeds better at this than me, but you could try editing yourself into the most basic of starfliers or something (one of your save files) - so its just a starflier, engine, power supply and scanner. Then you can work from there (note - add tractor if your mod doesn't make them mountable!)
