Quick Server Recovery Tip

Something that may be useful for server ops running high-availability servers is a very fast recovery ability when the game has serious problems ...

When your FL Server is running well, take a few minutes to schedule a maintenance slot and do this:

Stop FL Server and copy the Freelancer folder to another folder inside the same drive and main (parent) folder - the fastest way to do this is use explorer, browse to the parent folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\ Microsoft Games) so that you can see the Freelancer folder in the right panel, then right-click on it and click Copy, then right-click in an empty place in the right panel and select Paste. This will make a copy of the Freelancer game folder called "Copy of Freelancer". OK - now you can restart your FL Server.

Make a copy of the "Copy of Freelancer" folder on another drive, or even a CD.

If your server crashes and wont restart but your hardware is OK, all you have to do now is rename your normal Freelancer folder to "Bad Freelancer", and rename your "Copy of Freelancer" folder to "Freelancer", then start your server.

The player files are in C:\Documents and Settings\(Account)\My Documents\My Games\Freelancer, so they should be safe and sound - if the player files are good then this should get you out of trouble and up and running again in 1-2 minutes too!

Of course if your registry is damaged or your disk crashes or your server hardware has a problem this won't help because you may need to reload Windows and then re-install Freelancer, but in many cases (e.g. when applying MODs!!) this little precaution will get you out of reloading at awkward times, and worst recoverable case is to recopy from the CD or the other drive to the same parent folder. )
