LAN server HELP!

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

LAN server HELP!

I'm trying to set up a LAN server to test out my mod, but I can't connect to it even if I use the same computer the server is on! The server appears to be working, but when I try to connect I get an "Operation taking longer than expected" message which stays there forever! I'm using a Linksys router but I've never had trouble with anything else before. Also, FL says the server is not on the LAN. Please help, I've tried everything!

Also, if you're running WinXP, check to see if IPv6 is enabled on your network card. If it is, you'll have to diable it (uncheck the box).

Go to the properties on your network card. If you see 'Microsoft TCP/IP version 6' listed there, just uncheck the box.

Alright, I'm trying to test a mod again, but of course the same stupid problem is popping up, and I don't have IPv6 installed on anything. It did work once for no reason, and the IP address was the address of my laptop on the network instead of the normal one that usually shows up.

Is your server name very close to another server on the list? I ran across that when I was running the SG: BFM server on my pc and our new host was running one with almost the same name- mine didn't show up on the list, so I couldn't connect to it.

Yes, it actually did have exactly the same name ("test" ) as two other servers, so I'll try that once I get back from vacation.

think about port forwarding

(www.portforward.com all info there)

I had a problem that was pretty much the same thing and here is how I fixed it.

I tried doing all of the port forwarding that everyone mentions.
I checked (and was not running) tcp/ip6.
I removed my wireless NIC card.
I did everything short of pulling out my hair.

Here is what worked for me.

If went into the software for my router (192.168.1.1) and told my router config software to reset everything to factory defaults. My game runs great and I have no idea why doing this works. Every time I reset or reload the server I have to do this, but it DID give me a workaround that allows me to run my Freelancer server.

Try this and see if it works for you.

Umm...

As the description of what you are trying to do is not very clear, could this be a simple case of your FLServer laptop not being plugged into a hub as XP expects it, to let you connect to an FLServer session on the same PC without it being made available to the internet??

Windows 98 allowed it but XP needs to see your LAN card handshaking with the hub or another PC before enabling the virtual (internal) "circuit". It's a severe limitation when you want to have a quick game at an airport while waiting for your plane!!
