Open sourced server

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

Open sourced server

Have any of the programmer bunch ever considered working on an open sourced freelancer server, which could possibly be ported to linux? Reason I am asking is that I would like to have my dedicated server(P4 2.4 -1gb - 10mb/s both ways) running flserver, except it's Linux. I haven't tried flserver in Wine yet(Freelancer doesn't work), so it may work there, but that's dirty An open source server would let us do all of the server side things we've always wanted to do, but haven't been able to.

I am more than willing to work on developing this if there are others of a like mind.

This has been kicked around more times than a soccor ball at a World Cup match! Unless someone is willing to start this large project AND the fact FL is M$'s, I doubt it would happen.

Besides the modding aspects, why place a server in Linux? I am not trying to start a war or slam either side. Just wish to discuss the technical pros and cons of such a choice. I have been running at least one server for 26 months and have had few OS problems, just FL issues so is this to address those issues?

I think some of us would want to do that either because our main computer is LINUX or maybe, I think anyway, it might allow handling of greater number of players with the same processing power since LINUX is not as background heavy as Windows is.

But I do believe the fact the MS owns FL is enough to kill it in it's infancy.
