Setting up an admin ship... and other questions

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

Setting up an admin ship... and other questions

Hey all. I'm new to SysOps and had a few questions about setting up admin-class ships. I would like some of your ideas and preferences on what you like to set up. I'm running a custom LAN server with Chip's server ops mod, the Prometheus 1.2 mod and the tougher Manhattan missions mod along with the IFSO.
Also within IFSO I noticed a lot of victormod and TNG mod items... can I use those items as is, or do I need the specific mods installed in order to use them?
Last question, I see a few items (Uber shields, cloak, etc) within IFSO which suprise and worry me. Are they included so that they can be applied, or are they listed so the cheat ID system will work? If they are meant to be used- can I use them as prizes and award them to players if I were to create some type of contest or ladder competition? I hope the last question doesn't sound too hokey... I just didn't find the answers in the readme, and there isn't a help file.

Yes the mod has to be in use to Edit an item onto a ship that is not in the default FL game or from the mod you have already in use. But to edit ship loadouts with the mods you have installed, you would have to find the Gamadata file for it which most mod authors make now for IFSO. But the ones in question were added due to the Mods in question being used a lot with IFSO as Admins used them on their servers. So Joe added the information to save admins looking for custom data files.

You can edit them on ships safely but some you dont want on any ships or in some cases if patched to 1.1 then the cheat auto detect kicks in. So you could allow lvl 10 Graviton shields in use, but still have IFSO set to ban on anyone having a uber shield / cloak / Nomad torpedos-lazers

Thank you for your reply. I haven't been able to find a whole lot of documentation, so I am feeling this out a bit. I have the 1.1 patch but have purposely not installed it because I would like to be able to award some items... example would be "Uber for a day". This is only a LAN server for a small group of people, so I know cheating won't be an issue. I of course want to avoid the taboo topics, but I just had a curiosity as to whether I could use certain items within the IFSO. I'm simply trying to learn what the possibilities are. Thanks again

Well,I have set up a server, just vanilla with no mods, for me and a few friends. and one of the requests I got was to use one of the freighters that is in the games but not normally purchased, like the armored transport.
I have used the server admin tool to try to change a test char I created to the armored transport or any of the other ships but each time I load the game, once I try to check the loadout or go flying, the game crashes.. sometimes even crashing the host. What am I doing wrong?

Now that I notice it, I did load the server update.. should I just go with the original version or is there another way around this?

@ hoistimus
I've found that if you plan on editing the character, you need to play the character a few minutes and buy items for it. What I mean is that if you plan on changing weapons and shields (or what ever), you need to fill ALL of the slots in game prior to editing the character. Otherwise, those slots will not be available when you attempt to edit. I also discovered through trial and error that some engines and powerplants do not work on other ships and can even crash the game when you attempt to load the character. Or, you can load a character, and not be able to launch, fly or shoot weapons because the game dropped the incompatible item. If you plan on using the aromored transport, I suggest making sure the initial items like engine and powerplant are compatible- in fact just choose the items that should be assigned to it. I hope that helps...I also new to this, and this is what I have discovered so far. It's really a lot of fun figuring this out.
As to the original topic I posted for... The prometheus ship makes a rockin' admin/ server police ship. It is very unique and identifiable, and it doesn't really require a lot of editing... it kicks trash right out of the box.

Adding to my last post @ hoistimus...
If you were adding the "cheat items" (uber shields, cloak, super speed, etc) then the updated server would automatically kick you off, but I don't suspect it would crash your game... it "should" only give you a kick message. If you plan on using or allowing certain items which could be kicked by v1.1, then use the vanilla.
