bandwidth requirements

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

bandwidth requirements

I check through all the other server forums and didn't find anything on this subject.

About how much bandwidth is required per player or for servers of 16, 32 or 64 players

@neghvar

A simple question that could have many opinions.

Generally speaking, on a clean server with no mods installed, you can expect each player to need approximately 25-30 packets of information (upload) to experience a smooth game experience. Download speed isn't usually an issue since most connections have much more download speed than upload. Running a server on a 56 k modem can be a hellish expeirence for everyone. Even people that hook to your server using a 56k modem will negatively impact everyone on the server.

All mods will negatively affect this number. Also, what each player is actually doing will affect this number. For instance, if 3 players are in a secotr fighting with a lot of planets and astroids that's a lot of graphics to render and they will need a little more juice. On the other hand, if these same three players were just sitting in a piece of space void of any other objects and not actively fireing weapons then they would need less juice.
