Can''t make LAN server

Hi guys,

I can't make a LAN server to test my mod. FLServer seems to be running fine but it doesn't show up on the LAN list. I know I did this before a while back with no problems.

I'm using Win XP Pro SP2. When I first ran FLServer is said some firewall stuff, I forgot what I clicked, that dialog box doesn't show up anymore so I can't mess with the settings.

Also, I can run a regular Internet server just fine.

Any help would be appreciated.

Take care,
Cyrus

We need more information on your LAN and 'puter setup. One or two 'puters? What gateway? What firewalls?

Sounds like you have some LAN port blocking if you can play via Internet. The block could be on either 'puter. Even if it is one 'puter for both the server and the client, there could be an INCOMING blockage which would be evident playing as a client because all ports are OUTGOING.

How have you connected there two computers?
Don't quite understand this statement but I will assume you are asking how are two 'puters connected together. Vast majority of time people run cat 5 cable or wireless for 10 or 100 Mbps Ethernet. A DHCP server must be present to administer LAN IP addresses and that server is one of the many things a gateway does. Most gateways can have up to one subnet of LAN IP addresses, like x.x.x.2-254. The x's are chosen for your own LAN but should be one of the three private IP addresses never found on the public Internet (see here under #3, the 255 number effectively means any number from 0 to 254). The 2-254 is the subnet I mentioned and thus you can see you can have up to 253 Ethernet devices on your LAN. The number x.x.x.1 is always reserved for the LAN gateway IP address. So you can see as long as a LAN IP address is available you can connect a large amount of 'puters on a LAN and they all share the FL server plus any connection with the Internet.

An exception would be those 'puters that use another means to connect to a gateway like Firewire or USB. Pretty sure those gateways only accept single connections from other 'puters.

Hi guys,

Thanks for trying to help.

It's only one computer, first I run FLServer then I load the game. I'm using the firewall that comes with Windows XP Pro with SP2 installed. I don't know much about firewalls, I just used the default settings.

I only want to do this so I can play/test my mod. I thought it would be faster than a regular Internet game ( I still get a ping 0 in Internet ) but maybe it doesn't matter ? It just seemed better to play the mod in LAN mode.

Thanks again.

Turn XP's Firewall off. You can do this through the Security Center Control Panel.

Unless you really, really REALLY can't afford an el-cheapo $60 hardware firewall, then XP's firewall is garbage. If you're poor like me, then... uh... I still scaped up the money for a hardware firewall. Better protection, less lag... and no problems with online gaming.

go to the start menu. click run and type msconfig. then go to the last tab. (i think its the last tab. if not look at the bottom if it says "hide microsoft" or somthing like that your in the right place. then click it. when most of the things above in the list uncheck the reamning things. resatrte your computer. if the sever does not show up then check your filters and do not start feelancer untill the sever is fully loaded. hope that helps.
