Port Numbers

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

Port Numbers

What are the port numbers I need to have open to let other people on my server?

You need to have UDP Ports 2300-2400 open. Or more exactly you need UDP port 2300 for communications with Global Server and another UDP port within this range. You can manually set what second port will flserver add /p<port_number> to the flserver shortcut. However it still has to be within 2300-2400 range.

And you should also RTFM before posting questions (where the FM is readme.htm on the original Freelancer CD).

Shaitanro, if he is JUST talking about INCOMING ports through a normal firewall (most firewalls block INCOMING ports ONLY!) then you are INCORRECT! You need only ONE INCOMING port opened in a firewall to operate a FL server behind. The FL readme.rtf says use the INCOMING port range of 2302-2304 but why have INCOMING ports opened you don't use? Use the /P command whenever flserver.exe is run and add the INCOMING port number. For example my server runs on INCOMING port 2304 so I use the switch /P2304. Also you are incorrect that the INCOMING port HAS to be within the 2300-2400 range. It can be ANY port (up to the port max of 65535). Of course there are ports you wouldn't use as they are used for other things (I.E. port 80 is used for HTTP, normal surfing the Internet) but I have used all kinds of ports.

Now there ARE many ports OUTGOING but very few firewalls block OUTGOING ports. ZoneAlarm, a software firewall does and can be a challenge to set up (I have but it uses too much CPU utilization). The OUTGOING ports my server currently is using (subject to change of course) is 1110, 1111, 1112, 44171, 1255. Why? I'm sure there is some FL reason but I need not open a tunnel or set up a virtual server in my firewall for ANY of these ports because they are OUTGOING. Only on the one INCOMING port will I get unsolicited network traffic (hence why it is INCOMING) and only flserver knows what to do with that traffic. The tunnel will send them straight through the firewall to the server and the one program monitoring that port will pick it up.

Earendil, the man was simply asking a simple question to run a server, so I made it a simple answear. If some one uses a software firewall (I do it directly from the router with Cisco IOS) it's another question since there are very many softwares which do firewalling. My presumption is that to someone who is even thinking of runing a dedicated persistent server mastering his own firewall is a default and not a discussion.

Anyway a small piece of advice: if something is wrong first test anyone should try is to disable any firewall before concluding something must be wrong .

EDIT: I was refering to INCOMING UDP Ports.
