changed from Cable to ADSL and can''t connect

Hello,

I'm trying to upgrade my server from a cable connection to a dedicated ADSL.
I've had no trouble running the setup software provided by Telus (our local provider for Telus Velocity Internet Service) and can surf with zero problems. I can connect to the FL global server with zero problems.. I can not however connect to my server as a player. The game gives me the standard dialog about it takng longer than expected etc...You acknowledge this and get the couldn't connect to the server message. The modem Telus provided is a D-Link DSL-300G. Any ideas? Ive switched the connection back to the cable for now so the server will remain accessible to our players
The server name is Alberta Top-Gun Freelancers and we are running the TNG Ver 1.70 mod 207.229.36.241

On the FL CD read the readme.html in EXTRAS for the ports needing opened.

NB if your router can't handle opening port ranges then you wont be able to host unless you use DMZ and a software firewall.

Thanks for the reply.
This item is supposed to be a simple ADSL modem.....
I'm unsure where to find the ports that would need to be opened.
Is anyone familliar with Telus? I'm not sure if the service might have this type of thing blocked somewhere along the line(firewall of some type) but doubt it.
I can hook the cable back up and just run ipconfig renew and the server works fine.

The modem you describe, DSL-300G, is nowhere on DLink's website. They do have a DSL-302G though and I will assume you have that. The modem itself has minor gateway features but from what I can tell it has NO firewall features. If there is any port blocking going on it's not through this modem. You say you are hooking up your server to the modem but where are you playing FL (client side) from? On the server itself or on the "other" connection the modem puts out? This modem allows you to connect one 'puter on the LAN connector and another 'puter on the USB connector. I doubt though you can talk between them as if they are on a LAN. It's possible but there is no mention in the modem specs.

Need a little more info on how you hook up the server and where you play the FL client from.

I have a question for you. I am considering a switch for my own server from ADSL to cable since I am bumping up against the uplink limit of my ADSL line. Is cable faster in your case? Is that why you switched to ADSL, because it may be faster? Just curious...

The modem I have is a Non-USA model and not available there yet.
I've been trying to play across the internet from my cable connection.
A friend has tried from his asdl connection with the same results.
Telus support doesn't seem to have any answers either. I'm going to try a clean install of windows and go from there tomorrow.

your ADSL Modem aka router more than likely is running in NAT mode, so YOU have to open some of the routers ports. So if you dont know this why are you hosting?

Have a look Here for basic networking and Help FAQ's

Then read your modems manual on how to do it. Also note your software firewall will need the same so you have plenty to learn about.

Where I am (Edmonton, AB ) I've heard reports of Telus blocking ports because running a server MAY violate their user agreement. I would check that out.

I don't have this problem with my ISP - I'm not with Telus myself. I had a very bad experience with Telus' ADSL service and cancelled after giving them a month to fix it. Luckily, I kept my cable service up in the interim so I never really lost my internet.

Eary, regarding speed differences between Cable and ADSL - it depends where you are I belive overall, ADSL will give you a faster upload speed (though it depends on the ISP). Where I am, switching to ADSL helped tons on my server because my local cable ISP limits you to 256 on the uploads (around 700 on my ADSL now).

Good luck. If you can't get Telus working, I'd check out Interbaun as an alternative, if they're available where you are (www.interbaun.com).

Thanks for the advice.
A clean install of windows did the trick.
Running the game from my cable connection during peak hours is an exercise if futility! Cable slows down so much I get constant yellow and red icons.
Unfortunately where we are (Bonnyville) there are no other choices. Either Telus or Cablerocket.com. Next time a cable guy tells you that you won't notice a difference between cablerocket and telus during peak hours....you know the rest of the story!

BTW, while having these problems I called telus tech support and told them what was going on. The techie never batted an eye about the FL server, he also told me that they were not blocking any of the ports used by FL....Maybe he was a newbie there and didn't know there might be a policy about running game servers off their system.
