Remote Desktop control utils?

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

Remote Desktop control utils?

Apart from the Free www.RealVNC.com and the Expensive PCanywhere, what remote PC control utilities are you all using.

Currently I am using realVNC but it has some problems with some commands when operating FLServeroperator and looking for a better alternative. Price is an issue as I won't get the ISP host of the server to fork out for much if anything for the software so rules out PCanywhere and before someone suggests warez dont bother.

So what are you using that has:

- decent security, encrytped passwords
- can use all windows commands remotely Ctrl atl Del, Alt Tab, Alt F4 etc
- isnt a firewall pain, being NAT non NAT fussy
- not a bandwidth hog when minimised

Terminal Server anyone? It's free for up to two administrative connections - no additional licensing needed, and comes with win2k server. PCanywhere is clunky by comparison imo. Additionally, every XP machine can connect via remote administration, without further need for a client.

ping. i use kev term to telnet in, via fladmin, if its any help

telnet isnt a problem, its for using FLSO not FLadmin, has to be a remote desktop utilitly as theres no telnet access for FLSO.

I use XP Pro's Remote Desktop all the time, and it works very well. It uses encryption, and it can be accessed from a web page (by hosting web page that contains a ~300kb activex control). I've used it from public library computers a number of times, and it doesn't have any problems connecting at all.

I've read about more security flaws for PCanywhere by at least double than Terminal server. Microsoft flaws get the press, and it's all the 'hax0r' rage to say microsoft apps 'suxx0r', but i'd never use PCanywhere on my network, thank you. I've found Terminal Server to be fairly good. The level of security (as always) really depends what you do with it (and your firewall(s))- configuration-wise.

well neither machine is XP and Terminal control is now longer avalaible for win2k, only for XP and deriviatives ie 2003 - server.

So still looking so a replacement for VNC

Post Thu Sep 25, 2003 8:12 pm

I've been using VNC for many years now, and I've never had any problems with it. What specific problems have you been having? The are some other versions of VNC (search on Google) as well as some addons, so one of them might be more useful for you. Examples include TightVNC and Ult@VNC...

One commercial alterative to VNC is PCDuo, but it does cost money.

I'd recommend checking out Remote Administrator IMO it's faster than VNC and doesn't lag the remote computer nearly as much. It's only $35 to register (for 2 computers) and they have a trial version you can download.

well no idea what Joe did but the commands I couldnt use before now work in the current build, checked with a old beta and they dont in that, so it's a bonus

well that was a bug in the flserver code working with fiik's fladmin dll, theres a limit as to how many players a server can have and successfully kick and ban players. My server then had over 4500 player folders and 6000 characters, now with trimming about 1500 / 2000 and the commands now work.
